Why Does Everyone Advise Not Taking Travellers' Cheques??

I'm in the Travelers Checks for emergencies camp (or on a long trip for cashing at a bank and paying for the last part of your journey so you aren't carrying wads of cash at the beginning). Many smaller businesses do not accept them so they require a bank visit, I think is why people aren't so crazy about them these days.

Pat, you say you got Euro denomination TC's at your bank -- no fee. But do you have any idea how many euro to the dollar you got? I'll bet you lost up to about 6 or 7 percent in the conversion process? That's typical of banks and the AAA for buying foreign currency checks.

Your bank advertises "no fee" Euro travelers checks - but then they stick you with a nasty exchange rate. Pat - your bank (or AAA) DID NOT sell you travelers checks for free!!! Repeat that 3 times. Everyone who thinks they get them "no fee" must think their banks are charitable institutions.

There are no non-fee foreign denomination travelers cks. You either pay a fee, or pay an inflated exchange rate - OR in some cases both.
