Travellers cheques or currency?

We are visiting Port Douglas and we are trying to make our mind up whether to take Ozzie dollars Vs Oz dollars travellers cheques. When we visited Sydney most places took the travellers cheques as cash - is this still the case?

juliewood,

Why not bring your ATM card; the machines are ubequitous and generally give best exchange rate.

IMO Travellers Checques are really a thing of the past. All the airports (and anywhere else you would want to go) have ATMs and you can get cash immediately upon landing or as needed. This is also how you get the best exchange rate.

Are ATMs cheaper than credit cards? My credit card charges 1% for all international purchases...not sure about my bank for ATM. Is there a general rule?

We have found that by using an bank that is linked to our home country bank, there is no charge for withdrawing money. Your bank should be able to give you that information.
Certainly ATMs are the way to go - much easier than using travellers cheques and you avoid the problem of having foreign currency travellers cheques left over at the end of your holiday.

Thanks for the advice. This is what we tend to do in Europe. Will just take some cash to start us off.
Not long to go now... off on 14th July
