While most visitors are staying in Athens for 1-2 days and only see a small fraction of what the city has to offer, us locals know our city and all it's nice areas very well.
Based on that, there is a website where you can arrange a tour with an Athenian. They will walk with you and show you spots of the city that foreigners usually don't get to see.
This will give you the opportunity to meet locals and see the city through their eyes. This is a free service.
Here is the website : http://www.thisisathens.org/default....henslocal&la=2
The official website of the city of Athens for foreign visitors with many suggestions and ideas is:

Both Mariha and my self have been giving advice on what to see besides the main tourist attractions and also where to eat..
I really can't recall not even one Fodorite having ever followed our advice. ( which is really discouraging sometimes)

thanks for all the interest. Travel truly is personal and for many a day at a beach is ideal and for others only in depth historical touring will do. We feel happy with our choices and excited to see Athens and a few Cyclades, knowing we have barely skimmed the surface of a beautiful and varied country. If I said i'd been to the US and seen it all in 3 weeks I'd be ridiculous and similarly our 2.5 weeks in Greece will be woefully short but I hope we will be balanced and really soak up as much of the culture, the sea and history that we can.
