Which town in Vorarlberg?

Any suggestions for where to stay for a few days in the Vorarlberg district of Austria? We'll be coming from Zell am See and heading to Geneva. We love hiking and outdoor activities in general. Anyone have a favorite place in this area?

Though we only stopped there briefly, the town of Igls looked nice - - albeit small. It's roughly at the intersection of the main east-west highway and the road that heads north towards Reutte. For what it's worth, the Reutte tourist board sent me a great packet of all kinds of stuff on lodging and Alpine attractions in that area.

Best wishes,

Rex - Igls is not in Vorarlberg, it's in Tyrol! And even quite a distance from the border to Vorarlberg.

I am assuming you will have a sticker for the motorways in Austria, so you will probably drive through the Arlberg tunnel. If you head south in Bludenz you will get to a small side valley (Brandnertal) and the nice village Brand at the end of that village. I liked the hiking there, especially the Lünersee (lake) and around the Scesaplana mountain. Nice mountain huts there.

Another option is to drive via Ischgl - Galtür - Bieler Höhe Pass (very scenic!), but it is a toll road and takes a little longer. You might consider to stay in either Brand (my previous suggestion) or Schruns, which is also nice and quite good for hiking and outdoors, in this case.

Bregenz is in the Vorarlberg region and I found it to be a LOVELY town with an old section (pedestrian-only), on the water (many boating excursions possible). Read more about it (or just look at pics) online at www.bregenz.at

Whoops - - okay, we drove from there through the Vorarlberg, en route to Vaduz. My mistake. I do recall thinking that Bregenz would have been a nice alternative to Vaduz to get onward to Switzerland.

I have skied in the Montafon valley, which includes Schruns (previously mentioned), Tschagguns, St Gallenkirch.
Very nice area - in the summer you can continue at the "end" of the valley up through the pass and into the Galtuer area. Hiking will most likely be excellent.

I can also recommend the Zuers/Lech area for hiking - I think some parts are in Vorarlberg. Did a great hike there that took us across the border into Tyrol and back (or maybe it's the other way around - not sure anymore).

In any case, it's a nice area!
