Which Michelin maps for Dordogne?

So I am in the process of ordering the Michelin map(s) that would cover roughly Toulouse - Albi - Rocamadour - St. Cere and environs - Sarlat and environs. I thought I had everything figured out as I have the map numbers from a couple of previous trip reports (329, and possibly 337 and 338). Well, the good news is that Michelin published new maps in 2006. The bad news is that I can't tell now which maps I need. It seems 526 would cover most of the area, but has anyone purchased these maps recently and can shed some light? My local B&N and Borders don't have them.

Yes, you need 329, 337, 338. Can't you wait until you get to France to buy them? Not only will they cost half as much, but studying maps in a hotel room is a delightful pastime.

If you get the bigger regional maps, you will miss out on some details.

IGN maps (www.ign.fr) from the National Geographic Institute, are also excellent. When you want extreme detail (like the US National Geological Survey maps), these are the maps to buy.

Hi M,

I recently got some of the 5xx series Michelin Maps.

They are mostly 1:275k, with some about 1/300k.

The 3xx series are much better for the countryside.

See what's available at www.languagequest.com/

Yes, those are the right ones, and I, too, would wait and buy them once you get there. Every supermarket, newspaper kios, and bookstore sells them.

That's a relief! I thought they were out-of-print, since I can't find them anywhere here (yes, and I tried Michelin-US directly).

I'm way too interested in maps, and have already purchased maps for our forthcoming trip to the Dordogne (despite having maps from our 2002 trip to the area). I bought them from
Mapsco, which has a location near me, but is also on the internet at www.mapsco.com. The new numbers of the new maps that I saw and bought (though there also seemed to be some of the older maps there at the store) were 524 and 526, and those together include all the towns you mention. The scale is 1/300,000 (1 cm: 3 km). I believe they are more recently-published than the 300 series.

StCirq is right (as always!), the maps will be available there, but I like having the maps beforehand to figure out distances and locations.

Just about every Michelin map is updated every one to two years, whether in the 500 series or the 300 series or any of their other series. They are immediately updated if a new autoroute or major bypass opens in the area, but otherwise the roads don't really change all that much.

You can see all of your map areas and itineraries online at www.viamichelin.com if you are frustrated about not having the maps immediately.
