I always wear Dr. Scholl's. They cost about $20 at WalMart. And I get to stay another night in Europe with the savings.

I just bought a pair of Ecco walking sandals. They are a dream, I wore them all day last week and not a hint of a blister or soreness.

Ecco are a German brand, and I got them in London for £59. Not cheap - but worth every penny IMHO.

Merrell also has a great reputation for quality sandals.

Clarks do a range called 'Springers', which are also designed for comfort and support. They are cheaper than Ecco and whilst Ok,(I have had them before) not as comfortable as my new Eccos.

Just returned from 2 1/2 weeks in Italy and ended up wearing only 1 pair of shoes the whole time. Besides sneakers I had bought a new pair of Wolky sandals (Cosmo). I had never worn a "walking" sandal before, but I wore them the entire trip..could have left the sneakers behind! They have a nice 1 inch heel and velcro fastners. Walked 6 to 8 hours a day in Rome and then climbed hills and stairs on the Amalfi coast, Capri and Ischia etc.
They have a web site, but I just happened on them at a local shoe store. They are about $125, but worth every penny!

This shop is in Dallas, Houston and Kansas City but I buy by phone
1-888-261-2483 and ask for the manager Ellie because she'll know which run larger or smaller.
There are styles here we don't have in my location by the brands I like.

We just returned from 8 days in Spain. We walked, and walked, and walked. I had two pairs of Dankso sandals with me and experienced no soreness or blisters. For those of you who have tried Dansko clogs but not sandals, you should know that the sandals usually have a softer heel than the clogs.

I also like Born, Merrel, and Earth shoes.

nycjenny,
Do you have the name of the German store you mentioned, that sells Birkenstocks via eBay? I couldn't find it. Thanks.

I bought clarks springers/slingers(I am not sure) from Macy's and it had this strap on the back and it hurt me on the back of my leg so I returned it and I even tried Easyspirit shoe type sandal which also hurt me on the sides of my feet because they had leather lining inside the shoe but I agree that they both had soft cushiony sole. Saturday is our flight to Paris and I am still looking for sandals.

I know Paris is at the height of fashion-consciousness, but I'd still say Birkenstocks are your best bet. There are some nice-looking ones out there, but even better, you'll bless their comfort!

I have very sensitive feet and I had been relentlessly searching for comfort shoes/sandals for my trip - tried all the brands mentioned here, but all the ones I had found were either just simply too hideous and not even THAT comfortable. I would strongly suggest not ordering from the internet unless there's a good return policy (like zappos.com) b/c you really do need to try them on first before taking them with you on the trip. Just a few days before leaving - I found a pair of ballet flats that were perfect - I was so relieved! And they were not even one of the typical "comfort" brands - they were DKNY. Good luck!

I have been a loyal fodorite for about 4 years now and this is is one of the most helpful threads I've read in a long time. I've been looking at Zappos.com and see all the brands mentioned and then some. I've never spent any money on my feet, but have an upcoming 12 day cruise to Scandanavia and this time I will have happy feet. I've always lugged several pair of tennis shoes/sandals on vacation and have never been totally comfortable because of cheap shoes.

Thanks for all the helpful advice!

I can't believe I'm so excited about comfortable shoes.... I just purchased some Clark's Hyannis sandals online, not only do they appear very comfortable, but actually very cute as well! Thanks again everybody!

My Clarkes Sunbeat leather sandals just arrives, and they're perfectly comfortable--no need to break in.

Underhill: Thanks for the info on shoebuy.com. I have been looking for Clarks for my daughter, who loves the Cub style, but can not find them now. I just ordered her a pair and she will be thrilled! Thanks again, Judy

I bought a pair of "I Love Comfort" brand sandals from Sears yesterday and I tried walking with it inside our apartment complex and I felt comfortable. I have decided to take it with me to my trip. I think even though there are lot of expensive and comfortable shoes & sandals out there it all depends on our feet to really appreciate it.

Judyrem,

Glad your daughter will have the shoes she loves.

If anyone finds an on-line site for SAS shoes, please let me know; I suspect, however, that there isn't one.

Underhill,
I found the following message when I was googleing for SAS Shoes . ( I'm not promoting shoetoboot.com, I know nothing about that company, I just wanted to pass along the information about SAS not being sold online.)
" Are you looking for SAS shoes? San Antonio Shoes does not allow internet sales at the present time. If you are interested in purchasing SAS shoes, please call us toll-free at 1-877-427-9333 to talk with a sales consultant. www.shoestoboot.com "
