I'm American. The places I've traveled: London, Scotland, Paris, Antwerp, Norway, all through Italy, Madrid, Barcelona, and western & central parts of Turkey. I loved Paris (friendly people, to my surprise, and good food). Northern Italy was beautiful. I had a blast in Barcelona.

But by far, my favorite place was Turkey (every part). So many people invited us to their home, to sit down for tea, or show us around town. That was the one place I really got to meet and interact with the locals. The food is the best I've had in my travels. The scenery and history is indescribable. I felt safer in Turkey than in any other part of Europe.

Someone had to talk me into traveling to Turkey. My original perception of the country was wrong. I thought it would be like other Middle Eastern Islamic countries. Not the case at all. I am a single woman, 40ish, and a Christian. I had no problam whatsoever exploring the cities alone. Can't wait to return.

It would have to be the Czech Republic!! My wife and I have been all over Europe (England, Spain, Poland, Austria, Germany, France - just to name a few). I have been to 6 different countries in the Far East, while in the service. We are leaving next month for Rome, but I would have to say that Prague in particular will soon be the next "en vogue" city to visit. Great history, architecture, friendly people, variety of food, bars, etc. Almost unheard of as a place to visit a few years ago, this will be the destination of the furure!!

Ireland is my favorite place to visit--
I love the scenery, the people, the music. Give me a ruined castle and I am very happy. We have only been to Ireland, Wales, England, Scotland, Paris and Russia. Strangely, I found our three week trip to Scotland to be somewhat of a disappointment. Many people I've spoken to regard Scotland as the highlight of their travels, but for me, it doesn't have the "magic" that Ireland has.

England because I live here and am always glad to return to "this green and pleasant land" after my travels.

Greece because it is so laid back. It is impossible not to relax once you get on "Greek time" when "tomorrow" might mean the next day or next week. Also, if you know where to look, the food is very good and I have a soft spot for Retsina, romantic sunsets and dining out at small seaside tavernas.
Another plus is that every Greek island is different and there are so many of them, there is also the mainland, so it is hard to grow tired of visiting the country.

Beautiful Spain gets my vote for favorite European country. I adore their museums, architecture, gardens, palaces, cathedrals, mosques, parks, mountains, beaches, nightlife, shopping, friendly cultured people, and of course their outstanding diverse cuisine.

I liked Spain, too, but disagree about people being friendly. I found the Spanish not to be very friendly. I don't mean hostile, but rather reserved, aloof and not very outgoing.

Anyone going there expecting to meet the kind of friendly people you meet in Greece, Turkey or Italy is going to be very disappointed.

Arthur, I disagree with your poor evaluation regarding the spaniards. Spain is rich in culture and very hospitable. My wife and children have enjoyed our spanish holidays a great deal. We find the people to be rather friendly when you iniciate conversation with them. I find other european countries to have rude locals. Attempt to be polite and start a conversation with a spaniard, and they will fascinate you with great knowledge of history, exotic foods, dancing the night away, etc. And you may make a friend for life.

At the moment (not a European country, I know) Australia.

When I have lived in another country for 12 months or so, I'll then voice an opinion on it.

In the mean time, if you want to know which country is my favourite to visit,,,,,well,,,,I'm still checking them out. One by one....It might be a few more years before I can answer.
