Which castle - Neuschwanstein or Hohenschwangau?

We only have time to visit one of King Ludwig's castles - which one should we choose? Thank you.

I honestly wish you had the time to visit the largest, and most beautifully decorated (inside) of them all...the palace at Herrenchiemsee. However of the two you mentioned I'd probably pick a third one..Linderhof.

Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are right next to each other and could both be seen in one day. The amount of time it takes to see Neuschwanstein really depends on when you go and how long the lines are. If you only can choose one I would go to Neuschwanstein. Although it certainly touted a sa touristy attraction, it does sum up Ludwig and his eccentric life. I always imagine what the villagers must of thought while this was being built- only in the late 1800's-not that long ago. Whichever one you choose you'll at lest be able to see the exterior of the other! Intrepid's post is also true though-Linderhof is wonderful! Good luck choosing!

obrien,

We visited the castles this past March. Each tour only took approx. 30 mins. The biggest part of our time was spent traveling there because we were staying in Munich. The tours are scheduled so that you may visit one and only a short time later visit the other. I think it was around an hour - time to tour, then time to make your way to the other castle.

Really, if you take the time to get to the castles, it's worth visiting both. Otherwise, I loved Hohenschwangau just as much as Neushcwanstein. Each has it's own merits. I couldn't help you pick.

Have a good time.

Neuschwanstein is a large area but tourists are only allowed in a very few rooms. Most of the time we spent there was taken up by walking up the hill to the castle, waiting in line and walking up further to the bridge. The tour itself is very short. It is an amazing castle in that it is so creepily decadent.

Neuschwanstein, especially if you have children with you. It's the one they'll forever see pictures of and remember having been in. but as others say, if you can spend the extra couple of hours, see them both. They make a nice package. I also agree that if it's just adults and you're driving, and especially if it's in nice weather, the best of the lot in that area to see is Linderhof. Besides the palace (more palace than castle) there is the Grotto and the separate peacock room where Ludwig smoked opium. Very bizarre and very beautiful.
