Franconia, and not only the cities. Focusing on nothing but cities is a big mistake.

Besides, of course, Dresden and surroundings!

Did I type Frankonia? How did I miss that? Franconia - what a great place for beer and wine and a sausage.

I'm not sure if this follows the OP's guidlines, but here goes...

Berchtesgaden area - Ramsau and Bad Reichenhall are favorites.

The Dolomites in Italy - Brixen/Bressanone and just about every village from Cortina d'Ampezzo to Brixen.

Vinschgau/Val Venosta, Italy - Silandro and once again, everthing between Meran/Merano and the Swiss border.

Berner Oberland - Wengen is our favorite.

Austria - Hall in Tirol, Zell am See, Heiligenblut, Salzburg.

Bird--I first visited Coburg in around 1959 when my father was stationed with the 2nd Armored Cavalry at Warner Barracks in Bamberg. Coburg was one of the "remote border posts" on the front lines facing off against the Russians. We went to Camp Harris every Thanksgiving and Christmas for dinner with the garrison. And we frequently took family long weekends or went on day trips through the area.

My wife and I have visited both Bamberg and Coburg a couple of times in the past few years on vacation. We both love the area--though she doesn't appreciate the beers as much as I do!

Provence! I use St. Remy as a base to travel the area with an emphasis on hill towns. While I've traveled to 28 countries, Provence has my heart & soul. The first time I visited, I felt I had come home. (I latter learned my family had come from the south of France in the 900's. Maybe a previous life!) Plus, of course, the food, the olives, the lavender, the markets, the vineyards, the architecture of the villages, the photo ops & a little Roman history thrown in - I just love it all!
