which area of rome should we stay?
my boyfriend & i will be in italy for 2 weeks (last week of aug + first week of sep). at the end of our trip, we will be taking a train from florence and then staying in rome for the last 2 nights. our plan is to do a colosseum tour and also see forum and palatine. the last day, we will do a vatican tour at 9am and then see what we have missed (maybe trevi fountain & spanish steps OR pantheon & piazza navona). my first thought was to stay near the termini station but i can't find a hotel that doesn't look sketchy there. i also read that the colosseum area is not that interesting other than the colosseum. where should i stay during these last 2 nights? my budget is limited ... i'd like to spend 80-100 euro per night... but i don't want to downgrade so much that we end the vacation poorly (i've done that before and it is so anti-climactic!). it seems that getting an apartment (sleepinitaly - we are doing this in the beginning of the trip) will fit within my budget but i just don't which area to choose. thanks!!!

Not sure how esy it will be to get an apartment for only 2 nights and on short notice.
I would stay in the historic center (around Pza Navona). Can't help with specific recos since that is not our price point. Have you looked at eurocheapo.com and venere.com?

Monti area (between the Colosseum and Termini) is in fact an interesting area to stay, and has some great small hotels and B&Bs within your budget.
Centro Storico around Piazza Navona and Pantheon is popular and a great location, but it costs considerably more (up to 200 euro/night).
Plati area near the Vatican is also a good area, cheaper with direct metro link to Termini and Colosseo.

Monti is great most people bypass it however it is close to termini and gives you access to the whole of Rome for a reasonable prices.
You can buy day buss tram pass's and be anywhere quite quickly.

You can opt to stay at the Campo de fiore area, there are Hotel Campo de fiore or Case de fiore there. There is a market at the Campo de fiore area and it is very near to the Piazza Navona (basically just a couple of street away) as well and Pantheon and Trevi Fountain not that much far away.
I have stay there last January and managed to walk to Piazza Navona and Pantheon easily from there.
If you don't mind walking futher you can even walk all the way to Spanish Step.

There is a brand new B&B located right in the center of everything on Via del Corso. It's owned by the people who run La Papessa. I'm not sure of the rate but I think it's close to your price range.I have stayed at La Papessa and that is a great option as well. http://www.lapapessabb.it/
