My husband just came home with train tickets for me!! I'm taking a sleeper from Bern after work next Thursday night and will arrive 7:45 in the morning. This should be an interesting experience - I've never done a sleeper before. Then I return Monday afternoon so I should have 3 full days for my visit.
I'm staying at the Cavour based mostly on my daughter's recommendation. The price seemed reasonable and includes breakfast which gets good reviews on TA.
I'm going to print this thread before I go and also look up the thread VT posted.
I'm hoping I love Florence. Everyone says I will esp. since I'm not going in the summer. Sometimes when you wait so long to go somewhere, you set yourself up for a letdown so I'm trying to go with absolutely no expectations.
Now I'm hoping my bookstore will have Brunelleschi's Dome!
I'm probably a foodie but not an over the top one - just someone who likes well-prepared and presented fresh ingredients. I'm also known to eat bread and cheese in my room too after a long day on my feet soaking everything up. I'm sure I won't starve in Florence. Still, if anyone has a favorite little spot I'd love to know it.
Thanks everyone.

I just read the thread VT posted and it is very helpful with lots of great ideas.
Does anyone know if in November I would need reservations for the Uffizi or Accademia?
Thanks mms - yes he is not the best traveler himself but he is very supportive of my travels. I think he feels badly I left my career to follow his, and he is delighted I'm enjoying Europe.

Can't wait to hear all about it. I have no restaurant suggestions though since our trip was in 1999, lol!
