There is only one place: there is a small park at the north end of the Isle St. Louis in Paris. There are some benches, where you can see the boats go down the River. At sunset you can see the Eiffel Tower, the city.

Believe, you can't go wrong.

We have traveled to Italy and France, and Paris or Rome would be where I would have wanted my husband to propose. In France it would have been over dinner during a cruise down the Seine at night with beautiful Paris all lit up. My other choice would be over dinner at a cafe in Piazza Navona at night. Both are extremely romantic.

I have to go with Rick...that park is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

I would only be wary of gondolas because when my husband proposed to me, I was so happy that I was jumping up and down with joy. I am not sure how well that would have worked in a boat!!! Try to envision your future fiancee's reaction, and work from there.

Good luck to both of you -- let us know what you decide!

We went to Amsterdam and Paris for a holiday. I hid the engagement ring in my briefcase.

When we got to Paris, I insisted we go to The Louvre first. Once there, I insisted we find Venus deMilo. Once we got to the front of the queue and were in front of the statue, I dropped to my knee and asked her to marry me.

She was totally befuddled, all the other tourists backed-off and formed a big circle around the gallery. When she said yes and I got up, the entire gallery burst into applause.

I wasn't sure I'd be able to pull it off, but it was great!

All of the suggestions have been great so far, the restaurants in the piazzas in Rome is a fabulous suggestion- here are my three:
1. Trevi fountain at night (maybe a little crowded, but beautiful!) especially with first tossing the pennies in the fountain w/ the wishes!
2. A romantic picnic on the Champs de Mars (grassy area) in front of the Eiffel Tower.
3. If you want something quiet- maybe somewhere in the Tulleries (especially when the flowers are in bloom!)
Good luck!!!!

Simon, I would not do the Trevi Fountain. There are these guys selling flowers there that will constantly harass you and ruin your moment. They're a real nuissance and it probably wouldn't even matter if you bought flowers from them. They don't seem to care.

My roommate in school was asked at the steps just off Trevi Fountain in Rome at 3:30 am in front of 15 of us drunken bum friends. We all started crying and tossing coins into the fountain...whatever it made for a good Kodak moment although she almost dropped dead in surprise.

If you don't want to go to Europe but want that French ambiance, consider the restaurant at the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City, overlooking the St. Laurence river. Or better yet, head 60 miles north to the Manior Richeleau (in Point-Au-Pic?), preferably in late June or July.
