Where to take my girlfriend to propose?

I want to take my girlfriend somewhere special to propose - anyone have any suggestions of the most romantic place in Europe?

The obvious would be:

Venice, during a gondola ride at night.
Paris, at the top of the Eiffel tower (not too romantic, IMHO)
Paris, at La Tour d'Argent or simmilar place.

I would also think about:

Seville, looking at the city from Triana, at night.
San Gimigiano, at the top of one of the towers at sunset.
Luzern, at the top of Mt. Pilatus, looking at the Alps.
Heidelberg, on the castle, at sunset.
"24601", the poster above, made excellent suggestions. May I add Fiesole (at night or on a clear day), overlooking Florence?
Best Wishes,
BC

How about the bathtub?

No, seriously, I don't think you're going to do better than the gondola idea. It's the gold standard for this sort of thing.

And don't pop the question unless you bring the hardware, bub. Maybe bring a small flashlight to make it look sparklier. And for God's sake, don't drop it in the canal. BEST OF LUCK!!!!!!

Before you go the gondola route, I suggest you mention your plan to the gondolier, so that he's not yammering on his cell phone. Sorry, but I think the gondola ride is one of the most overrated attractions in the world.

Instead, go to Rome some night, get a table at a cafe in the Piazza Navona, and pop the question.

Dear Confused,
In "Les Miserables", 24601 is the prisoner number assigned to Jean Valjean. Sorry, but once a bookchick, always a bookchick!
BC

Confused: Don't worry, BC had me confused for a second there, too.

JAVERT:Five years for what you did
The rest because you tried to run
Yes, 24601.

VALJEAN: My name is Jean Valjean!

JAVERT:And I am Javert
Do not forget my name!
Do not forget me,24601.

I was going to say something... what was it?

Rivoire cafe at Piazza della Signoira in Florence, at night, if it is not too crowded (very good fragole (strawberry) ice-cream, too)

A picnic on the Provence countryside.

Yes, the Rivoire. That's were we went to have hot chocolate with wipped cream. We just said: "Una con panna" and they knew.

Lucerne, yes. Book a suite at Hotel Château Gütsch (sort of small Neuschwanstein castle and famous for weddings). From the bathtub, you can see the lake, the mountains... and your girlfriend. Don't forget to order the champagne to go with your bubble-bath!
The place is very romantic!
www.chateau-guetsch.ch
(part of it under construction though)

Simon,

Although the gondola ride sounds romantic, even a bubblebath with candlelight sounds romantic, if you're going to give your intended a beautiful diamond just be cautious. I'm sure she's going to get excited so you don't want her to drop the ring in the canal by accident. Sames goes for the Eiffel Tower or a bridge, you'll never find the ring if she drops it. I suggest you go to Venice, have a romantic dinner, propose, and then cap it off with a gondola ride.

However, my suggestion is Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany -- the castle that was the model for Cinderella's castle at Disney World/Land.

Congratulations.

Leslie

I might also pick Venice as I think that it is the most romatic city in Europe. I'll probably be flamed for this suggestion but I would also suggest a Cruise. They can be very romantic as well.
Regards,
Art
If dropping the ring is a concern, maybe you could tie a little string from the ring to the box (or wherever you plan to put the ring. Finding a box may be easier than finding the ring, and you'd be literally "tying the knot"

(Sorry for the bad pun)

My pick is watching the sunset at Oia on the north end of Santorini. We saw a young man propose on his knees at this location and I almost teared up.

I do like the flashlight idea if at nite. Mr.Go is a hoot !

Does she have a favorite city, town, place in Europe? A place that is special to her? What one of us thinks is romantic or special might not mean a thing to her. If she really wants to go somewhere, or she has a special place that she has been many times, taking her to that city, town etc would show you really care about what she likes.

Absolutely, positively Venice -- on a gondola! The reason I am so emphatic about this is because I was proposed to on August 3 in Venice, on a gondola, with a FULL moon out, and my fiance even got down on one knee. I can tell you from RECENT experience that it doesn't get much more romantic than that. We even had a gruff gondolier (though NOT unkind) and even his gruffness couldn't spoil the moment!

Good luck!
