Where to take my 9 and 12 year old boys in Madrid

Hello all - our big summer trip is almost here!! I have lots to fill in on my itineraries - but first Madrid.

We will be flying the red eye from the US and landing at 8:30 am. We plan on going to the hotel to drop off our bags, but there is a good chance we wont be able to check in so early. Any recs for what to do while we wait or even if we can check in and take a little nap - what is good to do for a first light day ? We are taking a Hidden Madrid tour the next day which was recommended for kids. The following day we are heading to Toledo for a day trip. We also have one more day in Madrid to spend after hitting Toledo.

Any and all recs of things to do and eat are welcome. My 9 year old needs a bit of outdoor downtime to run around, so we are going to limit museums to one a day max.

Thanks!!!!

First of all-be prepared for the heat and jet lag! You will notice it stays light until about 10PM and there will be lots of children out because it cools off a little!Kids love the Hard Rock Cafe-try to sit under the head of the bull-it snorts out smoke! Across from the cafe is the statue of Columbus and lots of room for the boys to jump around. Then across from there is a wax museum!
You don't say where your hotel is located in Madrid but the huge park Retiro would be great for the boys-rent a row boat!
I would recommend Segovia rather than Toledo but if you are all set then take the little tourist train in Toledo.

If not far from your hotel, Retiro park has a lot of places to run around and a lake.
Also, it is beautiful.

It looks like we are staying near the Retiro. The cross streets of the hotel are Alcala and Paseo Recoletos.
I like the renting a boat idea!!! Toledo is already booked

Great hotel location for shopping in elegant Salamanca district.
If your boys are interested at one point , not far is a wonderful Museo Naval.

Just saw your posting, hope I am not too late. We were in Madrid during April. We thoroughly enjoyed the Palacio Real and think your boys would really enjoy the Armory. It is filled with all the armour (people & animal)swords etc. We thought it would be cheesy but were totally won over. My husband and I both thought of our grandson while we were there. It also has a huge courtyard for them to "run around" in to release some steam. For the adults it has a fabulous view of Madrid. Retiro Park of course is absolutely fabulous for families and children of all ages. Plaza Mayor is quite entertaining with all the street performers also. Enjoy your trip!
