Where to stay in Vienna?

We have 1 night in Vienna as we have to wait for our train the which is booked for the next day. Any cute Pensions in the heart of the city center? I would like to stay near St.Stephen's cathedral.

Pension Nossek - www.pension-nossek.at - has a great location on the Graben just down from the cathedral. Good breakfast, 'net access available.

Years ago I stayed at the Pension Pretsky (SP?) very near the Hofburg--it was fun and I think it's still there. Not the area you want but almost within the pedestrian zone which takes you to the cathedral. Right behind St. Stephen's is the Hotel Konig von Ungaren (King of Hungary) which is one of the nicest places I have ever stayed. The interior is totally Viennese and spotless. Exterior is plain and registration area tiny but just beyond that is a 4-5 story atrium lounge/bar. The rooms are traditionally furnished and the bed linens are crisp and white.

Couple of years ago we stayed at Pension Suzanne. It's basic, but the location is perfect, a block from Staatsoper.

A few years ago we stayed at Pension Pertschy, which is on a quiet street off of Graben and very close to St. Stephens. The room was nice and the breakfast was pretty good.

Many hotels include breakfast in their rates, so don't limit yourself to looking at pensions only. In some cases, the line between "hotel" and "pension" is very blurred.
In addition to the suggestions above, there is also the Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth, which is very close to St. Stephan's and also to the U-bahn stop of the same name.

In December of 2007 we stayed at the Schweizer Pension.

http://www.schweizerpension.com/

Very good location, about a five minute walk from the pedestrian zone downtown. We walked everywhere with no problem. It is also in a very quiet location.

The pension is absolutely spotless and is non-smoking. We had a large corner room with floor to ceiling windows on two sides - terrific!

The breakfast is nice and more than adequate. The one staff member who served breakfast was delightful and friendly.

There is some construction going on in the central stairwell of the building. Do not be put off by the construction - the pension is absolutely beautiful.

I second the recommendation for Hotel Kaiserin Elisabeth. It is perfectly located in the city, right near the Stephansdom.

It is more expensive than a pension, but it is a lovely and authentic Austrian boutique hotel. Breakfast is included, served in a beautiful breakfast room, with servers who will bring you hot eggs and coffees, in addition to the generous spread of meats, cheeses, fruits, etc. laid on the buffet.

If you contact them directly, sometimes they will give you a 10% discount.
