www.venere.com

and for more on why I recommend it, read the following, (excerpted) from http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=1375008

Author: Rex ([email protected])
Date: 05/21/2002, 08:18 am

Message: I have been to Venice five times in three different hotels (one of those three times); despite that, I wouldn't feel totally confident that the place you really want is one that I know.

But I am confident recommending the website www.venere.com - - as a place where you can window shop; see where a property is, on a map; direct inquiries to individual hotels; get info on exact prices and availability - - and do your own bookings and cancellations.

Without a doubt, they do not have EVERY hotel in Venice - - but they are as close as you will find, I think.

And there has been a lot of debate on this board as to whether you might get a better price directly from the hotel, rather than booking through venere - - to which I can only say - - you MIGHT.

Best wishes,

Rex
I think Rex's suggestion is a very good one. In addition to www.venere.com, you should also try www.initaly.com, which has selected hotels they recommend for rent in all parts of Italy. Their recommended places all seem to have received good reviews.
