Have stayed here on our last three trips to A-dam.

Near to Vondelpark in back of the Leidesplein(five minute walk). Quiet neighborhood.
Aloha!

In mid-May for a one nighter before heading to East Africa we stayed at Hotel Luxer. About two blocks from the central train station. Had third floor unit. Except for stairs between second and third we thought the place was okay. Met our needs (quiet, clean and comfy). Fellow who was desk clerk morning we checked out is former American from Baltimore. Would stay there again.

Another rec. for Canal House. We had a very nice room--large, canal front for 190E (minus 5% for cash payment). Liked the neighborhood alot as well. We would definitely stay there again.
I inquired at Seven Bridges (the rooms look gorgeous) but could not get an advanced reservation (more than 2 weeks in advance) for less than a 5 night stay. And, because it is so popular, the proprietor thought that it was unlikely there would be availability at the two week mark. Our trip was in June and included a weekend--perhaps the policy is different in September and/or your 2 days are midweek.
At least walking around during the day, we thought the Leidseplein area was very congested--given your preferences I would hesitate to book there. (Again, Sept might be different)

We also stayed in the Jordaan area and we really enjoyed ourselves. We found a bed and breakfast called Maes Bed and breakfast. We paid approx. 95 euros a night and that included a very nice continental breakfast. The hosts are both great, esp. Vlad. The only con I can think of: you have to climb 2 sets of steep stairs to get to your room. I am not sure how warm A-dam is in Sept, but Maes doesn't have a/c. Hope this helps!

If you like bnb, you might try

studio in the Joordan area.
www.bebyme.nl. Also a studio.
We didn't stay there, but the bebyme
looked nice.

We recently stayed at the Dikker & Tjis hotel in the Leidsplein area and loved the area and the hotel. Our room was huge, bordering on too much wasted space, with a nice canal view. The staff was great as well. Especially the front desk guy.
Also, we thought the rate was very reasonable (in March) when we visited. but don't know about Sept. rates.
However, you can't go wrong in the Leidsplein area, it has a neighborhood feel with lots of friendly cafes and restauratns. It is much nicer than the area near the Dam.
Enjoy your trip!

Another suggestion for a B&B is Aemstelhuys (Amstel House) It is an old canal house built in the 1600s, now run by an Englishwoman about your age. She will make you welcome, and make your stay memorable.
