Where to sit in the theaters?
A friend and I are traveling to the city of London for the first time in 3 weeks. We are staying in the West End so we can see as many musicals as possible. We have pulled up the seating plans but don't know where to sit. We aren't familiar with the term "stalls" Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

My recommendation to you would be to check out the Half Price Ticket Booth in Leicester Square. You can usually get very good seats there at half the price. What is available changes daily. Matinee tickets tend to go on sale about noon and evening shows go on sale around 2:00 or 4:00. Stalls is the term used for the seats on the main floor and are usually the best seats. Circle is usually want we would call Mezzanine or even higher. Be sure to check out www.londontheatre.co.uk. Do not see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, it is horrible. I understand the current production My Fair Lady is wonderful. My last trip there I saw the Queen musical "We Will Rock You," and loved it. It is very campy and such fun. Have a wonderful time. I wish I was going with you.

Hi Sue.

My dream job is to spend my life watching shows, especially musicals. I have had alot of experience going to theatre so I feel that my input will be of benefit to you. I hope the following information helps you.

Stalls = seats at the very bottom
Dress Circle = first balcony
Upper Circle = second balcony

The best seats are always closer to the centre of the seats:
Stalls - Rows 3-7
Dress Circle - Rows 1 - 2

These are my preferred seats and I won't see a show unless I am sitting there! From these seats you are close enough to see the expressions on the performer's faces, which I think is very important. And I belive that if I am going to spend £20 on a ticket, I would rather spend extra to get the best seats.

However for the rest of the general public you can get away with:
Stalls - Rows 3-12 (quite alot further away but I promise a good view and you WILL enjoy it still)
Dress Circle - Rows 1-6

I went to see My Fair Lady just last week. A friend treated me - she bought cheap tickets from the half price ticket booth in Leicester Square for £11 each. We sat in the Upper Circle. It was almost like watching television it was that far away. We were lucky to find 2 free seats right at the front on the 'side balcony' - I don't know what they are called but they are not particularly good seats as you can only see half of the stage.

Here is a great website with all the current and coming soon shows in London. Best of luck I have sent you the 'musicals' page you can also check for Comedy, thatre, etc.
http://www.londontheatre.co.uk/londontheatre/whatson/musicals.htm

Kindest Regards, Janie
PS if you want to ask any more questions please feel free to write to me.
While I have used TKTS in NYC and been happy. I wasn't willing to give up the time to use the Leicester Square booth. Not just time in line, but traveling to and from there to get the tickets.

Not when London tickets are so much less expensive to begin with.

Keith

www.theatremonkey.com has information about London theatre seats, viewlines, etc. Some seats look better on the seating chart than they do when you're sitting in them.
