Where to go in France in December?

This thread has come up at a great time for me. I have started to consider a 2011 trip to Paris/Strasbourg, one week in each for mid/end of November 2011.
Based on a quick google search it looks like this year's (2010) Christmas markets begin at the end of November. For anyone in the know, is that typical? If I planned to be in Strasbourg at the end of November 2011 would I be there for the start of the Christmas markets?
My reason for a week in the Strasbourg area is that it is were my maternal great-grandfather was from and I'd like to go with my mom to see it. Christmas seems like a great time given the fact my grandfather (my mom's dad) was born on Christmas day!
