France over x-mas, but where else?

Hey all,
Im going to see a buddy in Paris over x-mas. The dates arent totally confirmed but its more or less 12/26-1/2 +/- a day here or there. How is the city over x-mas?
Will everything be shut down like here in the US?
Weather?
Any festivals or anything worth attending?Oh and Soccer matches, where can I find a schedule of those?
I am also interested in going to another city for a night or two that is relatively close...any suggestons? Spain? Italy? Prague? Please Help with suggestions, THANKS!!

Many places close on Christmas Day (only). Museums, restaurants, cinemas, etc., usually remain open.

It is usually cloudy, chilly, and often rainy in December. France doesn't decorate for Christmas the way the U.S. does, although the Champs-Elyées is lit up and the major department stores have displays.

Hi D,

Uhm, you will have to fly to get to those other places. Prague is about 600 mi from Paris.

You can take the TGV to Lyon in a few hours time. Chartres is just an hour or so by train in the other direction from Paris.
Strasbourg is another option, as is Brussels.
Then, there is London via the "chunnel" in a few hours time.

When we were in France before Christmas there were many decorations--quite a few shops and restaurants looked very festive, esepcially with piles of Christmas foods in the windows. The Place Vendôme was all lit up and featured a huge tree of branches affixed to cutouts. I thought it all much prettier than here at home.
