Vivoli (near Santa Croce)in Florence! Rivoire (also in Florence, in the Piazza dela Signoria) has an excellent strawberry gelato.

Scratch Giolitti and head straight for Della Palme, short distance away. You won't be sorry!

I've been to a lot of gelato places in Rome but the only "name" place was Giolitti and I loved it. If any place has gelato that tastes better, it has to be by mere degrees and I can't imagine any other place having the extensive selection that Giolitti has (although perhaps they do.)

The other thing I love about Giolitti is the location, close to the Pantheon. You can walk down to the Piazza della Rotonda with your cup or coni and have some of the best people-watching in Rome before you. The inside of Giolitti doesn't do much for me (faded Baroque) but outside there are a few tables and chairs, another great spot to sit and watch people.

Rome--Gelateria San Crispino
their lemone and arancia(orange) flavors are to die for! The best cocco, also. Near Trevi Fountain. It was rated the best by The Washington Post, and by AAA Spiral Guide to Rome, but we just happened to find it.
