Where to find "bare bones" weekly lodging in Rome?

My partner is thinking of going to Rome for a month next winter to practice his Italian. He is looking for private "bare bones" lodging for approximately 200 Euros a week. Any suggestions on where to find such accommodations? The last time we were there we paid almost that much per night so I know this is not an easy task. Thank you.

An internet search for "convents in Rome" will bring you to a number of listings for such accommodations - such as:

www.initaly.com/regions/latium/convent.htm
travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-722230-rome_hostels_convents_and_studen...

www.exseminarians.com/rome/links.htm

and a number of others. There's also a book (can't recall the name of it but I've seen it) that you ought to be able to find in a good travel book store about convent accommodations in Rome. They are usually in the 30-50 euro per night range, some have curfews (11 PM or so) and some don't; but they all appear to be good bargains.

A better website to answer your query on cheap accommadations is the Lonely Planet --- http://thorntree.lonelyplanet.com
At that site, the most oftened suggested place to stay in Rome is the "Beehive" --- www.the-beehive.com. It's a hostel/budget hotel; a private room without bath costs 35 euros and even cheaper are accommadations in the dorm rooms (20 euros per night). A newer place is Gulliver's House --- http://www.gullivershouse.com/. For other hostel listings, look on www.bugeurope.com.

Althought I have no experience with The Beehive, this might be a place worth checking out. http://www.the-beehive.com/home.html

My daughter and son in law, will be staying at the Hostel Alessandro. They have air condtioning(they are going in July) and breakfast plus they will have their own bath. They have to economize because he is in the Navy and is there for special schooling for NATO. The web site for the Alessandro looks decent. Hope this helps. Judy

I just got back from Rome and my friend and I stayed at the "Hostel Aladino." Actually, it wasn't that hostel, but the couple who own it alost have another hostel that they bring the overflow to which is even nicer. For elss than 20 euros per night we had a room with only 3 or 4 other people, breakfast, showers, internet, tv, etc. Definitely would go back.
