Where is this place?

It has me stumped. Do you know? Ever been there? Wherever it is, it's eerie and beautiful. (enlarge it for a better view)

http://www.concierge.com/cntraveler/whereareyou/

Well, for starters, it's in Italy.

From their clues:

<<Last year, the country—a touch larger than Arizona—reelected a once dumped prime minister, giving him a second stab at the job of lording over a nation described by a British poet as "a paradise inhabited by devils." >>

Clearly Italy.

from http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/it.html

<<Area:
total: 301,230 sq km
note: includes Sardinia and Sicily
water: 7,210 sq km
land: 294,020 sq km
Area - comparative:
slightly larger than Arizona>>

Presumably in an area where German or Romansch are spoken as much as Italian.

The story of the submerged is weirdly similar to the story of Lago di Vagli which contains not merely a submerged chruch but actually an entire submerged village. But the geography clues do not match. Lago di Vagli is not 15 miles from a country's borders. Nor 360 miles form the nation's capital (Rome). It's in Tuscany.

Who else can narrow it down further?

Best wishes,

Rex

P.S. For what it's worth, there is a similar game of "identify this picture" on www.travel-board.com at http://www.travel-board.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=395
< BR>

It is the artifical lake Reschensee/Lago di Resia in Südtirol/Alto Adige. The old village of Graun with 120 farms was submerged in 1950 after a dam was built in the river Etsch/Adige.

Wow, Daniel, you're good. Would it be in one panel of this map. If so, which one?

http://www.dolomiti.it/eng/geografia/dx.htm

This is the "Where is it" question in the current Conde Naste (parent company of Concierge.com). Who's going to send it in and win?

Good luck!

I believe that the winner comes from a drawing. Can't think of any reason that every Fodorite shouldn't or couldn't enter.

It would be great to see someone from this forum win!
This was sort of eerie. This summer I was looking at postcards somewhere in northeatern Italy and saw one exactly like that picture. At first I thought it was some sort of set-up or trick photography, but then realized it was a real place. I checked the map to find where it was, but we didn't have the time to go explore it.
