From what I've read, the castle (and man) that inspired Mary Shelley is in Darmstadt, Germany.

Here is a little blurb that I found on the myth/fact/legend ... "Lord Konrad Dippel von Frankenstein was rumored to have made a pact with the devil for the secrets to eternal life. He was found dead in his laboratory with foam in his mouth. They found various body parts in his laboratory that he had stolen from cemeteries and graves in the area.

"Locals believed that the devil had come to collect Konrad's soul, yanking it out of Konrad's mouth. Later, it was learned that, in a sad irony, he died from drinking one of his potions for immortality. He had performed numerous experiments on the bodies he had stolen. None with electrical volts, as the movie shows us. This is a Mary Shelley additive.

"Mary Shelley and her husband Percy Bysshe took a trip down the Rhine river in 1814 and heard the story of Konrad Dippel. Her next stop was Lord Byron's house on Lake Geneva in Switzerland, so she ended up placing her Dr. Frankenstein in Zurich. She wrote the famous "Frankenstein: the New Prometheus" in 1816, and the rest is history."

http://www.blitz21.com/frankenstein/legends.html

The castle is located outside of Darmstadt, close to Frankfurt. You can find info and directions at the following web site: http://www.darmstadt.de/english/frankste.htm

Burg Frankenstein is outside of Darmstadt, on top of a small mountain. Only walls are left. There is a nice restaurant next to the burg (castle) with a terrace view of the city. Since there is not much of burg left, most people I saw were there to eat at the restaurant.

Here's another site to check out...(unfortunately, the Frankenstein Castle Festival referenced was in 1999 -- but apparently it's an annual event).

http://www.whatsgoingon.com/coolest/place/19991022/
