Where in Europe would you live

If I could live anywhere in Europe, I would choose to live in Lisbon. I would have a beautiful, tiled apartment in the Alfama district with a view of the Tagus. Every morning I would wake up, throw open my shutters and gaze at the reflection of the sun on the water. Later, I would take my basket and walk to the market for fresh fruit, vegetables, and fish. Along the way, I would stop at a cafe for a cup of cha (tea) and talk to my neighbors about the soccer and the latest government scandal. My busy morning over, I would then proceed to the the Se (Cathedral) to hear the serene Mass said in Portuguese and to light a votive candle for my dearly departed friends and ex-lovers (It doesn't matter that I am a Buddhist). In the evenings, I would sit at the Cafe Brasileira, enjoying a glass of Duoro-which I will need to fortify myself for an hour of clothes shopping at Fatima Lopes. After spending a fortune here, but looking oh so chic and fabulous, I would visit all the clubs in the Bairro Alto, not making it home until 5 am. On the weekends, I would visit Cascais and try to pick up a few sailors on leave. (Have you ever seen a Portuguese sailor? Schwing!) Oh, what a marvelous life I would lead. But, you know what, after about 6 months of this I would want to come back to the good ol' USA! (I don't think you can get Captain Crunch in Lisbon, can you?)

John, it sounds like a lovely day you would spend <BR>Re; living in a city/rural area, I live in a suburb of NY and spend most free time in Manhattan..having lived in LA before this.I love London and Paris, and like the way the English treat their senior citizens..thinking that one day I may become one I like the idea of living in a city where I would be able to get around without a car, and could participate in all the activities available in a city like London or Paris. So maybe, a flat in London and a cottage in Provence? or an apt on the Left Bank and a cottage in England, ooohhh too many choices~not to mention wanting to be able to visit my son whenever I want in Japan, maybe this should be if you win the lottery -where would you live -M

Naples !!! the explosive sensuality, the overwhelming energy, the people, the pizzas and if you think that expressos are strong in Italy they just become gentle cups of tea when compared to the little bombs you find there. I would spend all of my week-ends on the Amalfi coast, in Capri or in Ischia, and when august come "arrivederci" everybody I would leave for the entire month just like anybodyelse in Europe, probably to the Eolian islands or maybe to Crete or Corsica. Haaaaaa! yes, life is good

Julia...Latvia is one of the Baltic States...Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south. We are way up north just south of Finland and Sweden...so lots of darkness right now. When June comes though...land of the midnight sun! I am here in Riga, Latvia teaching kindergarten at the International School of Latvia. I will be here until June, 2003 (2 year contract). I already really miss the States! But I always have Italy over here...just went to Italy the beginning of November and have already booked flight and hotel for a week in February...can't get enough of Italy!!

Afetr visiting there a few weeks ago, I'd say Ljubljana in Slovenia. Big enough to have plenty of culture and restaurants (plus delightful people), small enough not to have much traffic. Easy to get to the Alps or the beach in a short drive. Another contender would be Korcula, the island off the Croatian mainland. Laid back place with nice people and warm weather most of the year. Where I live now in Melbourne, Australia is pretty great - south coast of New South Wales might be even better....

Cannot resist sending this one back to the top. Laura, I already have one picked out -- Monkton Farleigh. Bob, ahh Lago Lugano. Or Maggiore, or Brienzersee, or Rapperswil, or Cully or Lutry on Lac Leman? It's a good thing I cannot afford to entertain the idea, because I'd never be able to decide. Mimi, tell us more about Eygalieres. J.
