By the way, Jim, I've lived in Farmersville and Willard, Ohio and Pontiac, Michigan among other places, so let's not talk about a lack of charm in places like Luxembourg, or the "poorness" of Poland. Krakow, Poland would beat the hell out of Farmersville, Ohio any day -- trust me!!!

Patrick --the problem here is really that I must be losing my mind > someone said something really nasty to you- but on another thread, and when I read Jims response to your reply-I got confused with Jim and Joe, see what I mean, I am definitely losing it--so my apologies Jim, you unwittingly set me off..yikes! and Patrick, I like the way you always answer nicely and I hate the way some people attack you and others here who are always so helpful..so that said, forgive me for blundering on such a nice thread..

I already live in London, so I assuming that that can't count. In which case:

1) Andalucia. Physically beautiful, lovely people great food and drink fabulous pace of life

2) Amsterdam. As above basically.

3) The Laungedoc. Same reason.

I wouldn't plump for Paris as although it is a wonderful place and I speak the language, I can't see the advantage of swapping one big city for another.

But if I had to pick somewhere in the whole wide world it would be Chiang Mai.

For obvious reasons I could only consider living somewhere where they speak English. So I suppose that leaves only England which is sad because the weather there is just awful.

So I don't think I could ever live in Europe.

Come to think of it, I did live in a part of Poland for a year--they called it Scranton PA. I think I will pass.

Hello George, given my very poor language skills, I would probably choose to live in the UK, more than likely somepalce near or in London. They have the "Chunnel"m access, and I can take a train to my second fave city: Paris! Judy

Sorrento would be my first choice, as expressed on other similar threads. I think I could also be very happy living in Seville or the south of France.

Agree with the San Franciscan above, California is great but boy does it take a long time to get to Europe!

j

I lived in Stuttgart, Germany for a year. It was great! So close to beautiful, quaint villages, the Black Forest, Paris, Provence, Austria, Italy, Switzerland. The only thing I didn't like about it was wintertime. I'm a Floridian and I don't like cold weather. Also went to Amsterdam which I like very much. It's difficult to make a decision on a specific city or town...each has their own character.

Possibly one of the small villages in the Wachau Valley of Austria. Beautiful scenery, nice people, lots of outdoor activities, a close hop to Vienna.

Definitely somewhere in Italy...the art, the wine, the people, the food, the wine! I live in Latvia now (moved from Chicago 4 months ago). Don't recommend Latvia...cold, wet, and very dark right now...can't wait for the summer and the sunlight! Huge language barrier here as well...Latvian and Russian are not easy languages to learn!

I definately would pick FLORENCE!! because of the city, with art in every corner, it's charming, has great food, unbelivable architecture and it's not soooo big.

If money were no object i would choose a nice farm in toscana somehwere in the viciinity of Castellina and San Gimgnano. If I had to pick a place where I might actually be able to afford some day it would be Cagli in Marche. No tourists. Wonderful truffles and great markets and restaurants in Acqualagna. 30 km to Urbino, 1 hour to Assisi or Perugia, 2.5 hours to Rome or Florence Beautiful countryside.

I'm still gravitating towards buying an apartment in Budapest. Why? It's a beautiful, somewhat overlooked city and wonderfully located within Europe. In fact, Hunagrians refer to Hungary as the belly button of Europe. I would need a small stone farmhouse on one of Croatia's 1,100 islands - preferably Hvar - so as to be near some water during the summer. I'll need to retreat to a warmer clime for the winter - a nice studio somewhere in Costa Rica or if pressed, Oaxaca, Mexico. Ah to dream.....

I think it's interesting that about half of us choose major cities and the other half very small towns or rural areas. I'm just curious if the bulk of those choosing big cities now live in more rural areas and the bulk of those choosing rural areas now live in big cities. What do you think?
