Your corner grocery store is a great shopping spot. We rent an apartment through VRBO, so we actually buy stuff there to eat. For gifts (or for yourself!) choose things in interesting containers with cool labels, i.e. inexpensive vinegars, pomegranite syrup, etc. Use them while you're there, empty and clean then, then pack to go home. When you get back, go to the craft store and get a clear fixative to paint all over the bottle/jar. I use my french vinegar bottle for dishwashing liquid--I added one of those olive oil pourers, and it works great. Use your imagination! I also love to buy the small authentic signs from BHV, i.e au francaise 'crazy dog', artists' entrance', 'no spitting', 'wipe your feet'.
