Where are the Gnomes?

Hi,
I am looking for a place in Europe that has lots of cute gnome figures and things that look like they are enchanted and made out of little logs. Does anyone know of a place that specializes in those types of items?
Thank you!!

I think maybe you're dreaming. We all know "there's no place like Gnome."

OK, now that we've all had our little fun, sparklegem, I can't think of a really specific answer, but know I've seen those things a lot of places. I'm particularly thinking in the Spreewald area of Germany -- east of Berlin. Also the woodcarving villages of Switzerland -- particularly Brienz.

There is a guy from my area who stole his aunt's gnome and photograhed it around the world and sent the pictures to the aunt. Eventually the gnome was sent home by limo with a bottle of Champagne. This guy was on every talk show after that. In Belguim and France there are many "save the gnome"clubs, they will kidnap them and leae them in forests, on bridges and wherever. Yes they are popular in British gardens.

I absolutely remember seeing something on T.V. about a "traveling" gnome and laughed so hard! Cigale - have you ever given out your email address here?

Welcome to the Gnome Liberation Front.
This organization has come into being for the sole purpose of liberating Gnomekind everywhere. Too long have these wonderful people suffered under the cruel mistreatment of humans. Man has looked down on these poor people for too long only because they are lacking in height. This discrimination must stop, and it is up to each and every one of us to see that it does. No longer shall these once proud people be forced to remain outdoors and fight the elements while their human owners enjoy the comforts of climate control and central heating and air. No longer must Gnomes suffer the extreme heat of summer, nor the severe and biting cold of winter. Never again shall Gnomekind suffer the indignity of being bombarded with bird feces. Never again should a Gnome be the victim of a careless pizza deliver driver, for there is no greater fear among the Gnomes than that of being crushed by an automobile. With cruelty and careleness humans place the Gnomes in precarious and dangerous positions; I say to you this must stop now! I am officially beginning my crusade to save the Gnomes here and now, this Thirtieth day of March in the year 2000. This is also a call to arms to all those who would sympathize with the plight of the garden Gnomes. I put it to you to take up the fight where ever you are. The next time you see someone has cruely forced a poor gnome to sit among their garden, steal the gnome away. Do whatever it takes to save the poor fellow. This cruelty must stop.
...it's hotmail

Someone is trying to replicate the hysteria and fan frenzy that followed the first gnome abduction. There were odd little ads in the Washington Post this morning directing people to whereismygnome.com.

There are Woodland, Dune, Garden, Farm, and House Gnomes. Gnomes are up to 3 feet tall. They will often have slight pot bellies, but their industrious nature keeps them from gaining a Hobbit like paunch. Most male Gnomes will sport a beard or goatee although they do not tie a deep significance to it. They do take pride in their enormous noses (often fully twice the size of any dwarf or human's). Gnomes run much faster (up to 35mph), jump higher, are 7 times stronger than man and have better sight than a hawk. Their feet are somewhat pigeon toed which gives them an extra edge on speed and agility through the wood and grass. They are in their prime of life at 275 yrs. old. Their life span is approximately 400 yrs. Gnomes usually get married at the age of 100 yrs. The married couple will only have one set of twins; a boy and a girl. Gnomes maintain close contact with animals and speak animal languages. Because of their love for animals, all the animals of the forest are the Gnome's friends and are willing to help him at any time. If you see a Gnome, he might very well be riding on the back of a fox, flying with a hawk, or even riding on the backof a frog. The gnome's natural enemies are cats, martins, snakes, goblins, and trolls.
Gnomes are very concerned with the immediate world about their homes and care for it tenderly. When they are done with their work for the day they will turn to their crafts, hobbies, families, and ale for fun and entertainment. Gnomes, while comfortable underground, have a strong preference to being above ground and out in the sun amongstgreen, growing things. They are in most ways a down to earth, gentle, and even tempered people.

The garden gnome tradition actually started in Nuremberg, Germany and spread from there. Germany is a great place for buying gnomes--you can find them in almost any good size gardening store.
