When to schedule a trip to Pisa from Florence

Will be in Florence for two days and then have a travel day by train to the Amalfi Coast. Would like to see the Leaning Tower now that it is open again. I was thinking about taking one of my days in Florence and maybe taking the train to Pisa at lunch time when everything may be closed in Florence, then back to Florence for around 4. Or should I wait for my travel day to the Amalfi to see Pisa - that is, early morning train to Pisa, then on to Naples (see museum with mosaics) then to Sorrento.

I really only want to see the Leaning Tower in Pisa, not the rest of the town. I would love to get your advice since I will need to schedule a time and get tickets to climb. Thanks

It isn't possible yet to book in advance for the leaning tower and they can't say when it will be.
For now you have to go to get a ticket at the ticket office and there will be a time on it - you can visit other places and then go back to the tower at that time - if you go in the afternoon you risk not getting in the day.
Yesterday the tourist office said it was better to go in the morning. The official office for the tower is open for 90 minutes a day! and I couldn't get through but I think their information will be the same!

Thanks, Helen. Do you know when the tower is open in June? Is it 8:00 or 9:00 am? I have tried to find up to date info on the internet and the official web site for the tower had not been updated the last time I checked.

The tower of PIsa will be there as it is now for some time.....if you have only two days in Florence, why waist time in a train, as close as those two cities are, ...why not simply enjoy Florence there is so much to see in Florence.....a penny for my thoughts...

If you are set on going to pisa, here is some info. Train from Florence to Pisa one way costs 9,500 ITL(About $4 USD.

I suggest going early in day (not the lunch thing. Expect 45 minute train ride each way.

In Pisa you can walk from the train station about 30 minutes and see the leaning tower (or else take bus # 1 which you can board just opposite the train station (across the street) – remember to buy your bus tickets (before boarding) from the station newspaper kiosk or bar for about 1500 LIRE). If you walk to the leaning tower, there are signs that have a picture of the tower and an arrow. Just follow the signs and you will end up at the tower (remember how to walk back to the station!).

They have reopened the tower to visitors (to climb up) but the crowds are limited to groups of 30. The tour lasts approximately 30 minutes and tickets cost L. 29.000 (15 Euro ) per person. Reservations may be made via email at: [email protected] Further information available at L'Opera Primaziale Pisana at: Telephone: 050 560547 or 050 561820 Fax: 050 560505

if you do not care about climbing the tower, and just seeing it from the ground, then don't worry about the above paragraph.
