NO Rob, they're not. It might rain (there's no time in Scotland when it might not rain)but short of serious aberration (Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore)it will not snow in August or in September below the peak of a mountain.

May/June is definitely better/more reliable. Augsut may well be warmer and you'll get more midges; but I've been sunburnt on top of the Cuillin ridge in September. Come when you can, bring waterproofs and you'll love it.

Rob, I'd be interested to know if your travel agent did actualyl visit Scotland in September and, if so, where and when was he here.

Your travel agent is giving you a "snow job." I been in Scotland in both August and September -- both were fine. (I've also been in falling snow on the 4th of July in California.) I would recommend that you abandon you travel agent (who clearly has an agenda of his own) and plan the trip yourself. Of August or September, I would recommend early September -- just after schools have begun in Scotland.

Rob,

We were in Scotland mid October last year, rain but No snow. In the 50's during the day, very pleasant.

I was in Scotland in August and September a few years ago. Unless things have radically changed and there is some polar ice cap movement of which I am unaware, your travel agent is completely off base. It was absolutely lovely. We did have to dress in layers -- at some points we wore sweaters, at other points long-sleeved shirts -- but there was no sign whatsoever of snow in/around Loch Ness, Glasgow or Edinburgh.

Hi Rob
I live here, it can rain anytime in Scotland, thats why its so beautiful, like one of your other replys yes may/june probably best and fresher. If you come in August/september bring some light rain gear and a jumper for warmth.Yeh! sack the travel agent and come over here, you'll enjoy the whiskey and the haggis, they will keep you warm and if you have enough of both you'll forget all about the weather and enjoy the hospitality. Go west coast if you are into adventure and just marvel at what you've missed your whole life.
enjoy Royston

You'll get no snow apart from on the tops of mountains, but you probably will get midges. They are no joke, they are tiny and can bite you in places you'd not think they can reach. Some sensitive people end up covered in red blotches. When you arrive, get some good insect repellent and you may even need a hat with netting if the beasties are really swarming.

Hi Rob,

Everyone here is right. We were in Scotland for 2 weeks last August and it was fabulous. No snow, and really not that much rain either, although we were glad to have our raincoats with us and we did use them.

As to the midges, maybe we just weren't in the right place at the right time, but neither of us had any problems with them, and we did spend a lot of time in the country.

Have fun!
