Thank you all so much for the advice! It's my first time flying in Europe and my fiance's second so any advice is helpful! Never would have known we need to remove our Ipad's either.

I just came back through LGW today, and the instruction was to remove iPads and laptops from bags for security, but not phones.
I had neither so i was a little surprised when my tray was selected for a special search - they found nothing of course but the official thought that it might have been my [turned off] Kindle that set it off.

I would NOT get there at 9AM given that you have to go through Security, etc., but who knows? You might not have any delays whatsoever.
SHOP or drink a LOT of coffee or pay to use that lounge upstairs at VCE if nothing else.

You all left out the possibility that you could be pulled aside at security because you test positively for explosive residue, a process that can be time-consuming..
That means everything comes out of your carry-on, and the TSA employees paw through the stuff. This happened to me last year.
When I asked why I would test positive for explosives, I was told it was probably glycerin in some lotion.
I have my mother's genes. She was always afraid of being late and would get there (wherever) waaaaay early. If I'm flying internationally, I am there two hours before the flight.
Weird stuff happens.

I got tested for explosive or drugs I think in Shanghai. They do it in groups - so one of us was a terrorsit or junkie. Then they brought the dog and it was quickly done, actually.

Just a tip: Please don't be the person who gets to the gate late, expects there to be room on the plane for her handluggage (there isn't), then argues about handing over her luggage, then opens it all up to remove something she really needs for this 1 hour flight, then has to repack and sit on top op the carry-on to close it. All of this just outside the door of the plane that is waiting to depart.
If you are traveling with hand luggage only on Easyjet, get Speedy Boarding or get to the gate early. After they have counted 100 items, the rest will go in the hold to be collected from the baggage claim area.

speedy boarding is [IMHO] a real rip-off. I've seen the "speedy boarders" called to the gate first, allowed to go through, only to find that they are being loaded onto a bus which then waits for the common heard, who proceed to get off the bus first thus leaving the speedy boarders at the back of the queue.
The way to avoid having your hand luggage put in the hold is to comply with the rules or better still, pay to put a bag in the hold, and just travel with a small handbag.

Annhig; even if your handluggage complies with the rules, they will take it off you when the cabin is full. Unless you only have a small handbag that you can put in front of you. 100 items in the overhead bins, after that it is full. I heard the arguments between the flight attendant and the guy loading luggage at the gate; unless it fits under the seat, they take it away. They count the number of suitcases while boarding.
Easyjet is so much cheaper than Brussels Airlines on most occasions, even including speedy boarding. We paid 110 euro per person for Brussel-Nice. No busses at either end, but long queues and nearly fully booked flights.

I flew out if Venice Monday, to London via Frankfurt on Lufthansa. I overheard one of their hosts tell someone they request arriving at Venice airport three hours early. I was curious about that, so I asked the woman checking me in, and she confirmed it. Three hours!
Having said that, it took me 30 minutes to check in and clear security. While I will not start going to VCE three hours before a European flight, I will aim for two from now on. It's not a tiny airport anymore, and it is very busy these days.

as for the time to check in, LGW is huge but I was checked in and through security in 10 mins on Monday which included being pulled over because they wanted to inspect my bag. I think the fact that Venice is relatively small compared with the number of people adds to the problems but I still think that 3 hours is excessive, and 2 hours is cautious.

I've had my hand luggage taken from me even when it was small enough to put under the seat in front of me. This happened once in the US and once in Italy. I suspected both times that because the bag had wheels, they decided that it was a "suitcase". The time it happened in the US, my flight was arriving late in the evening, and I wanted to catch the last scheduled shuttle to the town where my daughter lives. Because I had to wait for luggage, I missed the shuttle and had to take a very expensive taxi. What really annoyed me most is that when we arrived, I saw more than one person with large suitcases, who had been allowed to board and fill the cabin before half the passengers arrived.
On domestic flights in Italy, when they sequester your luggage, at least they don't put in the hold, but in a space where they can get it out quickly and it's always waiting on the tarmac or in the air bridge when you arrive. The time my bag was taken away in Italy, I was going to London (Ryanair) and I don't remember whether I had to go to the baggage carousel or not.

bvl - I'm talking about a "handbag" about 12" x 9" - it'd look pretty silly with wheels.
I agree about the unfairness of seeing people with over-large suitcases being allowed to take them on whilst those with bags that comply miss out - in this case I'm in favour of them applying the rules strictly so as to be fair to those who don't try to bend them.
Talking about Italy, coming back from Sorrento a couple of years ago, we were rather surprised to see a couple at the gate with an enormous suitcase that there were clearly intending to take on as "hand luggage". of course they were told that it would have to go in the hold, but how come no-one at security told them that they needed to check it in? it looked too big to go through the security machines. They were probably virgin travellers - when we got off the plane they asked me where they had to go next - so I suspect that they just didn't know that they had to put big cases in the hold and with automatic check-in, they just arrived at the gate with their giant suitcase.

I flew out of Venice in March and it was very quick and efficient. We arrived at the check-in counter 30-35 minutes before boarding with 2 big bags, hand luggage and skiing equipment and we even had time to go to the lounge for a drink. We get to skip lines but there weren't any lines to skip. We were travelling with Air France to Paris and then on to the US and Sweden.
Having said this, I wished I had arrived earlier as I saw a couple of very nice boutiques that I had missed in the mountains
