When exactly does High Season start in Europe - Mid July?

When exactly does High Season start in Europe - Mid July?
I am planning a European vacation in Italy and France for my 60 year old parents. They are planning on visiting Europe from June 26 until July 4, 2010 (Departing the U.S. on June 25th and arriving back in U.S. on July 5th) Will they run into the high season and how hot will it be? Which week in July does high season officially start in Italy and France? Any other travel tips for that time of year? Thanks in advance!

No - June through September - is definitely high season in terms of prices- although you will see the worst of the crowds in July and August. May and October are sort of shoulder - rack rates are high but more discounts are available.
Italy will likely be hot - perhaps very hot (high 90s). France may be coolor - or may not. Be very sure that they hae hotels with Amerian style air conditionoing. In europe they tend to talk about "air cooling" which isn;t - just really a sort of fan.

There really isn't ONE high season in Europe. It depends where you go, even within a country. In Italy, July is actually a shoulder season in Venice and Florence for example. Look at some hotel rates and you will see they are higher in May and June than in July. It varies from place to place. There will be "healthy" crowds at all the touristy places in France and Italy from May through September. Beach resort areas will be worse in August as that is when most Europeans get vacation. Highways, airports, etc are very crowded the last few days of July, first few in August and last few in August. In beach areas (Sicily, Amalfi Coast, Riviera, etc the highest hotel prices are August.
The dates you give there will be high (but not highest) prices, and crowds but not unbearable. In touristy places like Florence and Venice there are terrible crowds in the very busiest places (Piazza San Marco, Rialto Bridge, in front of the Duomo in Florence etc - but a few steps away it can be very uncrowded.
Hot is a relative term. Go to the weather sites for average temps, etc. I go to Europe every July and I don't think it's too hot.

For cities in Italy and France, low/mid season is mid-July through August because of the heat (especially true of Italy). You can usually find hotel deals in the cities for those time periods. August is high season for rural and coastal areas. So it just depends where they are going.
