when and where to exchange currency?

I'm going to Italy this coming September and the hotel I booked, Hotel Italia, asked for cash payment b/c I'm getting the Rick Steves discount.
As you all probably know, dollor is not doing too good right now ($1.2 for 1 Euro).
Do you think it'll get worst by September or pretty much remain the same?
When I do the currency exchange, should I do it in USA or in Italy?

I'm going in September also. Just hoping that the exchange rate gets better or at least stays the same.

I have to pay for my Apt with cash. I am planning on getting it when I get to Italy out of an ATM machine. I've gotten as much as 400 Euro in one day. I don't know that the limit is, but I believe I remember it might be 700 Euro per day. I don't know if it is regulalted by your bank or credit card company, or the ATM bank.

jamjam,

This question has been asked a thousand times. For the best rate at the time, go to an ATM machine at the airport in Italy when you arrive, and get Euro.

Who knows about currency fluctuations? ? . . keep in mind that the Euro was introduces at $1.15, so except for the fact that the dollar had strengthened some in the last few years, the current rate is not so bad.

Easiest way to get Euro in Rome will be ATM's . . you will get a rate very close to the commercial rate. Your bank may charge for each withdrawal, but the ATM will not.

My usual MO is to take out two days needs at a time . . seems to balance the concern about carrying too much around at any one time and the cost of each withdrawal. If they hotel lets you pay daily, (and most do ) just factor that into your withdrawal pattern.

Hi jj,

No one knows what the exchange rate will be in Sept.

The best way to get your hotel money is at an ATM.

Your daily limit is set by your bank. Ask them to raise it if you need more.

Most ATMs will give you 250-300E per transaction.

Yes, Ira's summed it up nicely for you. Jamjam, If you'd like more (endless) details simply type "currency exchange" in the Search box on this page & you'll see dozens of threads answering your questions (except for what the rate will be in the fall, because nobody knows that!).
