Wheelchair rentals?

We'll be arriving in Frankfurt in early September for 10 days in the Black Forest and Alsace. My wife is recovering from a painful back problem (which didn't exist when we made our reservations). She has been cleared for travel by her doctor, but would like the option of having a wheelchair along with us. So I'm wondering how we could arrange for a rental of same, picking it up and dropping it off at Frankfurt Airport. In the alternative, we could do that at Baden Baden, which is our first stop and en route when we go back to Frankfurt. The wheelchair would need to be a collapsible model that could fit in our rented car. All suggestions greatly appreciated.

I'm a big believer in utilizing the services of hotels. I would contact your hotel in Baden Baden and ask them how you would go about booking this rental. Unless you speak German, this is a situation where the assistance of a native speaker would be invaluable.

It will be much easier to deal with this rental at the hotel than at the airport. Esp since you can have the airline provide a wheelchair in the airports.

Just contact the hotel's concierge - esp in Baden Baden they're used to people with medical needs.

I've never traveled with a wheelchair, but I travel with a stroller all the time. The airlines let you take the stroller through security and gate check it at the door of the airplane. Then when you get off of the plane it is waiting right outside the plane door.

I would think they would offer a similar service for wheelchairs. Check with your airline. But if they did, then you could rent one or buy one near your home before you leave. That way you would know exactly what you were getting and you also wouldn't have to wait for wheelchair service in the airports. That can take forever.

Good luck and have a great trip!

In France, every pharmacy has wheelchair rentals. I wouldn't be surprised if the same weren't true in Germany. Maybe google for info on services pharmacies in Germany provide.

There is also some international disability association, the name of which escapes me, that provides such info. Again, google around and see what you find.
