Hi Rex: Having some mobility problems myself, I discovered that British Airlines is very user friendly. They insisted at Heathrow that they provide me with a wheelchair, and was I ever glad. They arranged for a chair and "driver" to meet me in Rome, and were equally as helpful on my return trip. Airports can be quite tiring for someone who can't move fast or far.

Have also travelled with a friend who is completely wheelchair bound. It is not easy, but it can be done. His companion (a young woman, not very large, but who had been "training") was able to push him up and down hills throughout Italy (including Montipulciano!). I don't think he could have done Venice, though.

If your mother has a handicapped plackard, don't forget to bring it along. Even though it is issued in the US, it is usable in other countries (as I'm sure you already know).

Your mother is very fortunate that you are doing this for her. Buon viagio.
