What's the Tuscan coast like?

We are having a week in the Siena area and wondered what the Tuscan coastline is like for a day trip to a beach (we will have our own car). Are there any nice beaches to go to to relax?

Yes I did Alice - just thought I would post a seperate question and exclude Elba - thanks. I went into google.com and found out about Castiglione della Pescaia - sounds nice. How could I find out the easiest route to get there? I see that Follonica is in a bay. Are there lots of little towns between it and Punta Ala?

Castiglione della Pescaia is nice but very trendy. If you only care for a walk along the seaside, you will be pleased there.
If you have children and want to play on the beach, I would recommend Follonica, not trendy but very easygoing. Lovely sandy beach.
If you want a rather deserted beach, go just north of Follonica by the SS1 and turn left after 3km to Torre Mazza, cross the railroad-bridge, turn right at the crossroad and turn left 1 km further: you will be on a lovely beach, with 2 very good simple and small restaurants.

Forget about Elba to go the beach; the ferry takes a lot of time and there are not a lot of easy-access places to the beach.

Follonica is known for its losy beach. If you are in the area, better beaches are Cala Violina and Carbonifera.

Alice - - I could not find the beaches Cala Violinia or Carbonifera on the Touring Club Italiano road maps. Where are these beaches? I'm a "newbie" to this site - - how do I access "messages in other threads"? We will also be in the Sienna area this July and hope to spend a day at the beach with our teen(15yrs), our 'tween(11yrs) and grandmother(young at heart). A friend recommended Follonica but is there a better beach (kids will probably spend the entire time in the water; adults will be relaxing on the beach and cooling off in the water). Grazie

Just go to Follonica and ask for them. You will hardly find them on maps.
