What to wear?

My husband, my father and I will be traveling
throughout the south of Spain. My question is how casual or how dressy should we dress.
It will be warm, (going end of July) and we
don't want to be direspectful when we visit
cathedrals. Also, what kind of adapters should we get for hairdryers, traveling iron,
etc. Thanks alot!
Hello - we were in Spain/Portugal this past April/May. Dress is about the same as the rest of Europe; dressier than over here, and darker, neutral colors. Dress or skirt/blouse ok, long pants ok, didn't see alot of shorts. Did see locals in both countries wearing jeans/leather jackets/boots. Cover shoulders for cathedrals. Electricity - you'll need an adapter AND a converter. I believe my adapter was the same as for France/Italy etc. If your hair dryer or whatever you're taking is dual voltage however, you'll only need the adapter. Most of our 4 star hotels were equipped with a decent hair dryer (and I might add...all had washcloths!) Hope you have a wonderful trip. I posted info about ours when I got home, maybe you can find that and get some more details.

Cheryl Z. Thank you for your message.
I know about the weather in March/April,
since my friends were there. My problem
is that we are going in summer. Has anybody been there in the summer months.
I have been told that only tourists wear
shorts! Am worried because it will be
quite warm. Also, what do we do about
cash? Should we take travelers cheques
or just use an ATM card & credit card?
We plan on taking some pesitas with us.
Thanks for all your help.
o
I spent a semester in Sevilla and my college advisor, a Spaniard, told me not to wear shorts because only Americans wear them, the point of studying abroad was to learn another culture and blend in, etc etc. So I didn't take shorts (I'm form Los Angeles) and really wish that I had. Andalucia is HOT well into October.
Moral of the story is: wear what is comfortable. Everyone knows you are a tourist, why be uncomfortable and hot in your clothes? Wear what you would wear at home. I found Spaniards to be nice people - polite to tourists and curious. You are not going to be treated poorly because of your clothes (I wore jeans everyday, so trust me on this!)

We just returned from the Costa del Sol (Marbella) area and Seville this past weekend. I would second Wendy's advice. It was HOT! Low to mid 90's everyday and sunny. I can only imagine that it will be even warmer in July. We brought a wide variety of clothing because of the concerns you expressed. In general dress was casual. We saw all varieties of clothing from slacks and jackets to shorts, to sundresses and miniskirts. Even in Puerto Banus, which we expected to be upscale and dressier, people were dressed casually. My advice would be to dress comfortably and keep the heat in mind. Even indoors it can be very warm because some places we went either had no airconditioning or used it very sparingly. You may look like a tourist if you wear shorts and t-shirts but so what. There are so many tourists there in the summer that you will blend right in. Even the european tourists were wearing shorts and some were rather scantilly clad at night I might add. Just be comfortable!

Dress casually but be sure to have safe spots on you for your valuables, not just in southern spain but all over Europe where there are tourists. It's no fun having your passports etc. pinched.
