What to do in Madrid if it is raining.
I will be in Madrid May 2-6,. Other than the art museums( of which I can only take so much) what can we do if it is raining while we are there? Will that put a real damper on our vacation? I am originally from Seattle so a little rain is not going to bother me but since I now live in Mexico I cannot stand the cold.
Any hints?

Lunches and evening meals takes at least three hours each. That means it's takes six hours per day, during the rainy days.
You might jump onto a AVA and run down to Sevilla for a day or so. Of course, the meals in Sevilla are longish too.
Take a trip to Segovia or Toledo. It might not be raining, even Madrid rains.
Visit El Cortes Ingles (sp??)in the center of Madrid. There are two or three buildings full of items to buy. Certainly it would take a full afternoon or more.
Madrid probably cooler than Mexico City but Madrid isn't going to be cold in May.

I'm not trying to be cute here but there are obvious things like coats and umbrellas. . . .
But if those aren't options, the Prado and the Picasso museum, of course. I agree about the Royal Palace. Also, trips to Montserrat and/or el Escorial would be possibilities.

good suggestions so far..
once you have seen the art museums you want to, there are recitals, concerts, musicals, temporary cultural exhibits, and plenty of movie theaters with films in the original version.
and as mentioned there is always "el corte inglés".
outside madrid at Xanadu is the largest indoor ski area. i think they have other entertainment there, but i am not sure what it is.
i like the national library which usually has great exhibits.
also, la casa de américa, near cibeles has a good restaurant besides being an interesting museum.

Okay, not all of the time but in Andalucia in the summertime, it becomes onto the timetable. Go with some friends at a nice restaurant (Sanlucar had good choices for long lunches) and when you're finished, head home. Take a small siesta and when you wake up, you can call up your friends and ask where you're going to eat.
And never forget that the discos are not open until midnight, which will burn down the calories from the two meals.
Being a working boy, it was killing on the weekend meals.
