I've stayed at the Grand on a number of visits to Lucern. It is gorgeous, fabulous lake views, but pricey. You pay extra for that balcony overlooking the lake, let me tell you! The rooms vary tremendously in size and furniture configuration. I was there in April and they were undergoing renovations and it got a little bit noisy but we didn't mind. I believe we paid about $400 a night at that time for a balcony lake front room (#416). Breakfast is not included in the price. The Grand is my favorite hotel in Lucern but I (we) often opt for something less expensive. If you are celebrating something special, go for the GRAND!

Ok ok! Hotel Des Balances it is! Done. No more looking! Heat wave, shmeat wave. We'll take our chances on the hotel without A/C. Hopefully we won't be cursing our decision later. It does look quite nice.

Peace out,

Thanks SloJan. We will check out that restaurant at Des Balances. I've emailed them 3 days ago about a discount nightly rate, but STILL haven't heard back. I'll email them again!

Stever, there is also a nice Italian restaurant right next door (upstairs) to the Balances and if you like Greek food, I higly recommend Styraki near the train station. I didn't even know I liked Greek food but this place was great!

Another good reason that we always travel in the off season (fall, winter, or early spring)...do not have to worry about AC since it will be cool/cold, and I have yet to find a hotel that did not have heat in the rooms.

We DID finally hear back from Des Balances Hotel and got a decent rate of CHF 316 a night for river view room OR CHF 376 for a Junior Suite/river view. Which would you go for???

The difference is $50 US a night... and for that amount, we can eat a nice dinner each night for "free"! My wife loves the idea of a suite, but she agreed $50 is alot (X3 nights). Should I surprise her and upgrade, or is that ridiculous? I know it's a highly personal question but... WWYD (what would you do)?

Thanks,
Steve
