Sussex Gardens.

Look at The Omega Hotel or the Best Western Delmere.

Sussex Gardens is convenient for Paddington -- but it is a long way from Liverpool Street Station where the trains leave for Ipswich, and from everything else you'll want to see. Plus I personally really don't like the Sussex Gardens/Paddington area.

If it was me -- I'd probably stay the first 3 days somewhere near King Cross so you are w/i a reasonable tube ride of both Liverpool Street and Paddington AND on the direct tube line in from LHR. Then stay the last night either in Oxford - there is an express coach from Oxford right to LHR, plus is is a short train ride from M-i-M . . . OR . . . if you are only staying the night before flying out, either at Paddington or at LHR.

Question: Do you really want to spend your only free day in London riding on a bus??

For something @ King's Cross, look at the Megaro Hotel...or the Pullman sometimes has a deal on booking.com

Thanks for the help, will look at Kings Cross. janisj what would you do in place of a bus tour? We planned to hop on and off, just needed quick access with just a day. Again thanks!

Do some reading up and decide which couple of major sites you want to visit . . . Could be the Tower of London or St Paul's or Westminster Abbey or one of the BIG museums, or the Cabinet War Rooms, or a walk through Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens, or big time shopping, or Greenwich . . . whatever floats your personal boats.

>> just needed quick access with just a day. <<

The H-o-H-o buses are not at all 'quick'. They sit in heavy traffic most of the route. Head out and actually see some things and don't spend your only day sitting on a bus, jumping off, then hanging around waiting for the next bus.

Try the Hoxton Hotel - if you like lively places then it is a good option. Sounds like I am marketing it as I mentioned the Hoxton yesterday on another post but I stayed there recently and found it great for getting to Liverpool St (15 mins walk or 5 mins and about £6 cab)

As you want to get to Ipswich staying around the Hoxton/Shoreditch area is perfect

Ipswich is 1hr 10 min from Liverpool Street - trains every 30 mins on the mainline to Norwich - (I am a London boy now living between Ipswich and Norwich)

For your day in London I agree with janisj - don't waste time on bus tours. From the Hoxton/Shoreditch/Liverpool St areas you can easily get to Jack the Ripper area (Spitalfileds behind Liverpool St) or London Bridge or the Tower of London

The area around Liverpool St and Shoreditch has a "vibe" and has a lot of history as well as good pubs, bars and places to eat
