Betty,

I never claimed to have the power of knowing, if fact, I said that since I was not the one with all the facts, that I choose to let the one's with the facts ( the doctors and scientists), make the ultimate determination before I so quickly disregarded the opinion of another.

I already apologized to Paul for my moment of irritation. I am not sure why it required additional discussion.

Interesting how most of these posts degenerate into rudeness as they progress down the line. Who cares what you pack in your private bag...whatever you need, or think you need, and only you can answer that question. I am assuming that you have thought of the usual stuff, like water, kleenex, aspirin, maps, sunglasses, rain bonnet, whatever. It is personal matter, and not worthy of such debate.

Chris,

First, I'll say apology accepted - no biggie at all, really. Thank you for replying. Next, I'll admit that perhaps my post came across as flippant, at worst, but I still maintain that I was not disrespectful in the least. It seems my choice of a slang-ish word translated into something more than intended, even though my qualifier of
"sounds ... to me" was meant to express my personal feelings only. I am sorry for any misunderstanding.

P.S. - Have a great time in Germany -- and wear those shorts if it's hot!
IMHO ~ Paul
---
To Lent, the original poster: Sorry to have contributed to clogging-up the information flow for you, but it looks like you have gleaned more than enough outstanding advice to pack into one day-trip bag.
---
To Sandi: Uhmm, OK...whatever.
We just returned from a 28-day trip to Spain and I started out carrying around everything I thought I could possibly need and ended by carrying as little as possible in my nylon bag. Because it was hot in Spain, I always carried a bottle of water. I also carried tissues or a small role of toilet paper (only needed twice in 28 days, but when you need it, you need it!); an empty film container filled with Rolaids (combination of heat and foods can cause tummy upset), my camera and extra film, and sunglasses. Found I could live without everything else.
Also found that most all the things I packed in our luggage (just in case) were not needed, and if they were, would have been readily available everywhere. Yes, it is inconvenient to have to run to a pharmacy or market for something, but it was also very inconvenient to cart this stuff all over Spain. Next time, I'll stick to prescription medicines and my trusty Rolaids and take a chance with everything else. Also, took rain ponchos but never saw a drop of rain until the day we left for home. I imagine you will find it different in England/Wales, however, and will probably need an umbrella.

To Dr. Forder
Hi! As far as my foot problems and shoe requests - I visited a podiatrist and discovered I have some actual foot weirdnesses. I was fitted for orthodics and am pain free.My shoe choices are more open, as I don't need the shoe, itself, to do as much foot correcting as I did, before. I'll be happy to report on my total comfort level as all will be surely fainting with anticipation :]

Dear Sandi - I did admit my question was not concerning a desparate situation, so it's ok if it didn't meet your level of Fodors worthiness. I have never daytripped like I will be doing, so I wanted to learn from you all the least amount I had to cart around.Plus, I love to think I'm part of this great web site!! Nice day, all, and many thanks!!!

We purchased the Rick Steves day pack and both my husband and I liked them it was just the right size to hold everything encluding any purchases we made without being bulky. The site to look at them is www.ricksteves.com.

these individuals ignoring science and FACTS remind me so much of the millions uninformed here in South Africa who think that 1. aids is caused by poverty 2. cure for AIDS is sleeping with a young girl.

ignorance is one thing....but stubborn stupidity......

Boy, I really didn't mean to tick off so many people! This hasn't happened since I left journalism.

No, I'm not a doctor, but I did get my information from one. I have a friend who's a research scientist (biochemist) who told me some frightening stuff about the antibacterial products, and that the companies decided to use it just as a marketing ploy (he works for one of those large food/consumer product companies we've all heard of). I was just passing along the info.

Listen to the lawyer! Do your own research, and come up with your own conclusions.
