Don't just stay on the crowded streets where the shops are. For a spectacular view, climb one of the nine defense towers and see the inspiring vista over Lucerne. The 860 yard long Musegg Wall, erected between 1350 and 1408, is almost perfectly preserved. The mighty fortification forms the northern half of the previous ring-wall which led from the Hof Bridge, Chapel Bridge and Spreuer Bridge over the Reuss to the southern half of the wall.
There are many beautiful buildings in Lucerne and some breathtaking views.

hawaiihoneymoon is describing Mount Titlis. There are hourly trains from Luzern (Lucerne) to Engelberg (1 hour), from where you take 3 different cable cars up to Mount Titlis. For the English Website, go to http://www.titlis.ch/001tit_00_en.htm

You'll never know for sure unless you go there YOURSELF. Personally, I have always enjoyed the city and like it or not, yukky or not, it IS part of Switzerland and only you can decide whether or not it is "worth it." I think you'll find that it is worth at least ONE trip.
