What is there to see and do in Gothenburg?

I have a friend in Grastorp, and she wants us to fly in through Gothenburg. I've read a little about it, but I'd like personal experiences, dos and don'ts, and detailed info. about the Archipelago Islands and their accessibility. Also, is it an expensive place to explore? The airfares are nothing to sneeze at, either. Anyone know any less expensive air travel tricks? Thanks in advance, Angie.

Where is Gothenburg? Greek Islands? Did you read last months questions--there was an answer to a question about flying as a courier to get the best airfares and I read somewhere how to determine which cities in Europe were most likely to use a courier. Might have been a website or travel book. If interested I'll try to find it!

Gothenburg (Goteborg) is in Sweden, on the southwest side from what I can gather from maps. I never knew about it either until my friend who lives there said for me to fly in there because it is so much closer to her than Stockholm. We all learn a little every day I guess.

Angie, found a website for you on Sweden. Until someone who has been there answers your questions you can browse through it, Just go into Alta Vista Search Engine and type in Traveling in Sweden and/or Travel to Sweden. Different webs came up with each input. There is one that has discount airfare, just type in your departure and arrival dates and it will find you best price. You can also try 1/800-LOW AIRFARE OR 1/800 FLY FOR LESS. I've misplaced the papers I wrote the addresses down on for you but one of them had a virtual map of Sweden and I pinpointed where you are going. So try it.. and have fun!

Thanks Tricia! I'll try all yor suggestions. I am looking for the least expensive ways possible. I also haven't had much luck with Swedish maps yet either. Here I go!

I have been to Gothemburg (Göteborg). I spent 22 years there actually. If you havent allready left - here are some pieces of advice;
Find the part of town called Haga, an old and cozy part of Göteborg with wooden houses and lots of small cafés and shops. Avoid the huge shoppingdistrict near the centralstation wich is where youll gett dropped of by the airportbus.
The so called AVENUE is nice to stroll around for an hour or so, lots of outdoor restaurants in summer.
Its easy to get to the archipielago and it is wonderful. Take tram numner 4 to ”Saltholmen” and get on a fairly cheap boat to one of the islands. Out of wich ”Brännö”, ”Styrsö” and ´”Vinga” probably are the nicest. Mail me if you have any more specific questions.
Per.
