Bavaria

Interested in accomodations, rental cars, things to see and do in Bavaria in October (after the Oktoberfest). Especially castles not to miss--any castles you can spend the night in--kinds of accomodations, resorts, seeing the Salt Mines in Austria--any info anyone wants to share to make our trip more organized and fun. It's been 30 years since we were in Germany, and we are really looking forward to going. So much to pack into a 2 week visit--don't want to miss the very best! Also, any restaurant recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Post privately to me please. THANKS!

If you would take a little time many of your questions have been answered. Scroll through others questions. I just spent 45 min looking up the salt mine question in Austria for someone last week and other questions about Germany/Austria that already been addressed in mid-June, so I just scrolled through, looked it up, printed it out and answered. I know you can do it!

We always stay in Garmisch-Patenkirchen when visiting Bavaria and do day trips from there. Castles not to miss include Linderhof, Neuschwanstein and Herrenchimsee (on an island on a lake halfway between Munich and Innsbruck), day trip to Innsbruck, go up the Zugspitze, highest mtn. in Germany (10,000') but the trip is not cheap, woodcarving and site of Passion play in Oberammergau, Wies Kirche, a beautiful church in the meadow, Kloster Ettal or Andecks where the monks brew liquor and beer.
Contact the German Tourist offices in NYC, Chicago or L.A. for maps, lodging guides and sightseeing and events guides.
In Garmisch do a Heimat Abend, an evening of food, music and dancing and song. Two of the best are Hotel Frauendorfer( can be awfully smoky) in Partenkirchen and a restaurant on the hillside outside Partenkirchen, the local tourist office would know the name.
The local folk museum is worth a visit. Sports facilities include a huge swimming complex with wave pool, ice rinks, tennis, golf, etc.
We stayed at the hotel across from the Ski jumping stadium in Partenkirchen in 94. Sorry forgot the name but rooms had private bath, buffet breakfast and the place had an indoor pool and lovely garden. There are many B&B's and private homes that rent rooms, I think you will like it there. If you do not have a car, trains run to Munich and Innsbruck and stops in between, local and regional buses cover other areas and there are sightseeing buses to many attractions.

You'll find a lot of information about things to do in Bavaria at http://gosouthgermany.miningco.com
Look in the "Resources" section, where there are lots of links to sites all over the Web.

Passau is a great destination in Bavaria, and often overlooked by tourists. From there you can take a cruise on the Danube for an hour, an afternoon, or days! There's an article about Passau at http://gosouthgermany.miningco.com/l...y/aa050697.htm and one about the river cruises at http://gosouthgermany.miningco.com/l...aa00052797.htm

Starting August 1, there will be an article at the main Southern Germany for Visitors site about a company that provides 3-day, 4-day, and longer excursions through the Bavarian countryside -- by horse and carriage!

Happy Vacationing!
