What is the best way to get to Florence?

We are planning to spend four nights in Florence and four nights in Siena. Would it be an easier trip to fly into Rome and take the train to Florence or fly into Pisa/Florence. If we use the train from Rome, will we need to take a taxi from the Rome airport to the train station, or is there a train station in the airport? If we fly into Pisa/Florence, will we need to taxi or train into Florence?

It is much easier to fly to Pisa(very tiny airport)and take direct train from airport to Florence, takes less than an hour.

THERE IS AN AIRPORTM IN FLORENCE. WE FLEW THERE LAST OCTOBER BY WAY OF LONDON FROM ATLANTA. IT IS A SMALL AIRPORT BUT ONLY A 10 MINUTE RIDE TO OUR HOTEL IN DOWNTOWN FLORENCE. WE WOULD CERTAINLY GO THIS ROUTE AGAIN. . THIS WAS OUR FIRST TRIP TO FLORENCE AND SIENA. WE LOVED BOTH CITIES. AVIVA

Ann:

Cheapest flights of these three airports is to/from Rome. But since that's not the question you asked, I'm assuming that is not an issue.

There is an airport in Pisa (Galileo Galili) and another airport in Florence (can't remember name). I've flown in/out of the Pisa airport. It's small & very manageable. Plus there's a bus that you can take to get to train station. Or you could jump into a taxi for short hop to Pisa Centrale. It's about a 8-minute ride from airport. Train ride from Pisa to Florence is about 1/2 hr.

OR you could simply dispense with train altogether & taxi to Florence. Suspect that would be tad pricey, however.

We have arrived in Florence both by train and plane and plane wins hands down. When you add the cost of the taxi from the Rome airport to the cost of the train ticket your even with the cost of flying Rome to Florence. Also the Rome train station is a madhouse. The airport in Florence is small and a 10-15 minute taxi ride to the hotel.

I flew into Pisa via Milan. Very easy. There is a small train station right at the airport. Have a great time. Jean

Ann-Our family flew from the states to Brussels on Sabena and then Sabena to Florence nonstop. The flights were great and I would highly recommend it! We took a taxi outside of the Florence airport for a very modest amount and were at our hotel in less than 15 minutes.Florence airport is small.

Don't rule out the Bologna airport. About an hour away from Florence on the A1 (nice drive except for the trucks.) It has consistently been the cheapest airfare from the east coast of the US lately, although these things do change. Nice size airport, smallish, with all of the amenities.

I've taken the train to Florence and flown into the airport and I would recommend the flight. As others have said, you're right there. You can even take an airport bus into center city in 10 minutes. I'd also recommend you take the express bus from Florence to Siena. We did this same route 2 years ago. The bus is very nice and comfortable, it's only a 1-1/2 hour ride, and it drops you off in the old part of Siena. More convenient and faster than the train. If you're not staying in the old part, this advice might not apply. (But do stay there! The rest of Siena is pretty commonplace.)

Thank you for the wonderful information. It looks as though flying into Florence or Pisa wins hands down. I'm in the process of checking the best flight schedules. Appreciate the comments.
