I like to shop at Inno, right across from Gare Montparnasse. In between that and Luxembourg, there was a bakery in a small sidestreet where you could get baguettes for like 3 or 4 francs. That was like 50 cents back in the day!

Hell baguettes at bakeries here are at least $2 and not as good or fresh.

Paul's is a chain right?

"Fortunately for David he will be on tour while I am in Paris"
LOL!

Oui, oui, Eileen. I've always told people that I have some sort of magnet that attracts the loudest people in the theatres to sit RIGHTBEHINDME. About the only sound you'll hear will be polite laughter during the funny parts. This alone makes me want to live in Paris!

BTW, David Sedaris now splits his time equally between Paris & London. He told us this tidbit about the difficulty in translating books from English to French. He used the name Britney as an example. In America, if you use the name Britney it conjures up a certain image, usually one of a teenager who loves to shop. So it was up to his translator to find a French name to equivocate that. The translator came up with Marie Chantalle. So Mr. Sedaris asked a French friend what she thought of when she heard the name Marie Chantalle. She replied that "Marie Chantalle is the type of person who, when her ashtray is full, buys a new car."

Oui, Paul's is a chain with about 34 locations in Paris alone.

But that's not to say it's not a good boulanerie!

beatchick...yes! by now, i've been to paris 6 times, and notre dame, is always an experience. i've even seen the segrada familia (sp?) in barcelona, but st. sulpice was so different! honestly, i'd say it's more authentic as a place of worship. i always like to light a candle when i'm over there for family and friends who are absent, and no longer with us.

on another note, angelinas...really does have awesome hot chocolate, if you can call it that!

I didn't get back to the Le Closerie des Lilas but love that place.

Pierre Hermes macarons,

Deyrolle on rue de Bac where all those curiosities and stuffed animals, framed dried herbs and flowers and preserved insects from all over the world.

Eglise St Suplice,

Baker Gerald Mulot,

The jardin du Luxenbourg,

Poilanes. bakery. I met him before his death. His daughter has taken over operations,

and too many eating places/1

I got an email from Cara Black. Her new book, Murder in Montmartre comes out March 6.
She'll be speaking in Paris at Shakespeare &co and the Red Wagon.
You can catch her at bookstores in April in SF., LA., Oregon and I'll see her in Boston. Meanwhile she'll be in Montmartre to help a friend who has had a baby.

Beatchick/Mary,

I just have to find out if this is a photo of you (in front and centre) at the David Sedaris book reading held at the Village Voice Bookshop in Paris last week? It featured on the latest Parler Paris newsletter and I thought it looked so similar. This is it:

I don't think so. That lady has red hair & the lips are too thin to be me. That would've been fun, though.

Faux, how are you doing? I stayed at Hôtel les Degrés de Nôtre Dame again.

Mimi, I thought of you when I went & how you'd told me about Odile. She's a very nice woman, very open & giving. Isn't David Sedaris hilarious? But when he was doing his reading I heard a bit of a quaver in his voice so I think maybe he might be a bit insecure after all, like so many of us.

Heavens, the 6th has so many great cafés, you have the 3 big ones: Café de Flore, Brasserie Lipp & Les Deux Magots, then there's Café de la Mairie with its great views of St-Sulpice and then there's Café les Editeurs on the Carrefour de l'Odéon which Mimi told me about a few years ago (although I didn't go in but I did pass it).

My favorites are L'Ami Jean and L'Affiole, both on the same street.
The St Suplice with it's copper line mystery.

Heavens,
I second many of the places that have already been mentioned -- Cafe de Flore, Gerard Mulot, and Amorino, for example I also love Cosi for a delicious quick sandwich and the restaurant, Fish la Boissonnerie, across the street:

Cosi
54, rue de Seine 75006
Tel: 01 46 33 35 36

Fish la Boissonnerie
69, rue de Seine 75006
Tél : 01 43 54 34 69 - Fax : 01 46 34 63 41
Métro : Odéon or Mabillon

Heavens,
If you like Jazz, Le Bilboquet on the rue Saint Benoit, just down the street from Cafe de Flore, is excellent

Le Bilboquet
13, rue Saint Benoit 75006
Tel: 01 45 48 81 84

There is nothing like your first trip to Paris, and the 6th is so well located. You might enjoy taking the batobus, which hits all the main tourist attractions.

Have a wonderful trip!

For Santa Maria Novella fans like me, there are two shops only that carry the line. One in the 6th is Amin Kader at 2 rue Guisarde, the other is their shop in the 1st at 1 rue de la Paix.

I'm so jealous that you got to meet David Sedaris. Me Talk Pretty One Day is a favorite of mine. One of those books you read when you need a good laugh. His sister Amy is so funny, too.

Ecat, hi!
It's good to see you back on the boards. Have you been back to Rome lately? I miss the Panico apartment!

Johanna! Hi!

Good to see you here as well. I've been off the board for a while enjoying building a relationship which is great and now I am back because we are going to London and Paris in May! So excited to be doing this.

I've never been to London but my bf's brother lives there so he'll take good care of us and I'm not doing huge research on London, I'm just going with the flow. We have rented an aparment in Paris and I can't wait to go back, it's been too long.

I was in Rome last year at this time and sadly I did not stay at the Panico. As you know I tried something different by the Trevi as and really did not enjoy the area and MISSED my Panico apartment. I want to visit Lo Strongna and see the sweet waitress there, she was so nice. Next year I will go back to Rome....

Take care, Eileen

Eileen,

Congratulations on your relationship! You will have a wonderful time in London and Paris.

I've often wondered about how the apartment by the Trevi worked out for you. Was the area just too crowded/busy? I do love the neighborhood of the Panico apt. If everything works out, I may be back in Rome in May.

Glad you are well.

Johanna

Oh, and in the interest of contributing something to this thread, Gerard Mulot's bakery is wonderful.

Well, thanks all for the wonderful suggestions. We will check the all out. Think that is possible? Can't wait. Sounds like we are in the perfect neighborhood...don't you think? Chocolates, cafes, bakeries. We may never leave the 6th! LOL...
