What is best map/book for using Italy trains while traveling?
Hi, just wondering if anyone can recommend a map that details train routes and stations in Italy? On-line is great and we are using the seat61 and trenitalia websites to help us plan, but once we are in Italy, we won't always have access to the internet so I'm thinking a light book/map that helps us choose train stations as we travel would be great. If it has additional information like timetables that would help too. Any suggestions?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I am not sure what you are asking for. The Cook train schedule was once the bible of schedules but haven't seen one for years. Besides it was bulky and heavy so I am not sure I would want to carry it. All of the station have huge displaces of printed schedules. I forgot the color pattern - one is yellow and the other is white. One for arrivals and the other for departures. These schedules will list the stops for every train coming and going. I guess I have never worried about the in between stops or even chosen a route based on in between stops.

I don't understand either, especially about choosing train stations as you travel. Are you planning to arrive in Italy without a plan as to where you're going? That's fine if you are, but all you have to do is go to any train station to find out where trains go, and if your plan is to travel by train, surely you'll be in train stations.

If what you want is a book that has information about nearest train stations, main destinations one can reach from those station, length of trips, and frequency of trains, then you might check out the Rough Guide - the end of each section normally has that information.

You can still buy this, once our Italian holiday "Bible" - the current edition should be good until long after you're done here...

The one I've still got from 2003 is about the size of a small paperback, and hasn't needed new batteries yet!
Otherwise, if taking a digital camera with you, perhaps just photograph any routes of particular interest - variously....
- from their own website...

- from Trenitalia's ticketing site:

- or other such sources, like this one...

... which, for that same Naples/Vietri sul Mare service, gives...

I'll leave it to you to work out how to make that fit a single photo!
