A sight is something that you go to see. A site is where the sight is located.

On the internet, a site is also a location.

It died a timely death, Thank God! Let it remain deceased.

But I think we're fighting a losing battle: spelling is in danger of becoming a lost art.

Hope I don't get in trouble for asking this, but how do I spell Coliseum (coloseum? colosseum?). It makes a difference because I never know how to spell it when I am trying to do a google search. It's not a typo either - I just flat out don't know how it's supposed to be spelled.

Cigalechanta: Having come to know you as one of the truly kind people on this board, I hate to disagree with you, but "Coliseum" is not correct in any language. The closest is "Colisée", which is, of course, the French name.

Jolie: In Italian, it's "Colosseo".

Underhill, thanks for getting the site/sight distinction out there. I posted the same thing on the "answers" thread. Drives me crazy!

Off the subject a bit, did any other Fodorites hoot and howl over President Bush's recent speech, where he objected to Amnesty International's criticism the prison at Guantanamo.

Amnesty International apparently relied on information provided by detainees, whom our President described as, "people who hate America, people that have been trained in some instances to disassemble, that means not tell the truth."

Eloise, I just checked in my dictionary. It is also correct. I noticed Mylesaway used the spelling.

I'm just glad there is more than one way to spell it - I don't feel so bad anymore. I think I'll try "Colosseo" from now on!
