What Happened to Fodor's?

Suddenly, other than the forums, the server is asking for a network password, which of course I do not have. Is this something new or a server problem?
Me too! Earlier today, everything was normal. I got right to Fodor's via my Favorites. Tonight - the gray screen kept coming up asking for my name and password. I've never registered a password. I tried to get thru via a search, couldn't do it; emailed [email protected] and that came back undeliverable. After emailing a fellow poster to see if she was having problems too, I tried typing in the web site address I had for the forums and got thru. But when I tried to go to their online notice on the bottom of the screen to pursue this, the screen pops up again asking for name/password.
This is NOT helping my addiction any! Help!!

It is 2:13 a.m. in Little Rock, Arkansas. Just home from a night of dancing and what do I do??? Check to see if any new posts! I was able to connect right away with no problem. I leave in less than 2 days for my first-ever trip to Europe! Thanks all for every word you have contributed. See you in 26 days! Linda

Hi everyone.

Just I thought you should know that Fodor's has been having some intermittent problems. We recently upgraded our servers, and, paradoxically, this has casued the site to be more unreliable. However, once we get the kinks worked out we're hoping speed will be better and downtime will be minimized.

We're very sorry if the downtime caused any inconvenience. Rest assured, however, that we continue to try to do our best to get Fodor's website running as quickly and reliably as possible.

Sincerely,

Brent Peich
Director, New Media
Fodor's

Thanks------you can see many of us go through "high anxiety" when we're cut off. Looking forward to the upgrades---this is a great site.

Brent,

I don't know if you're the right person to contact but since you answered the questions regarding the intermitent problems caused by the upgraded servers I hope my message will get through.

I'm sure that Fodor's servers are processing hundreds (maybe thousands) of repeated messages every day. There are messages that are processed 3 or 4 times. IMO, this is so because of your "sorry message" when the servers are busy and thus not able to process a particular post at once. The point is that while the message is being displayed, the server continues with its job. By the time the poster hits the back command, his post has already been processed. Every single time I got
that message and waited a bit (instead of pushing the back command at once) my post was processed all right. Your "sorry message", because it hints the reader to start from scratch, is thus the cause of the repeated posts. If, instead, it displayed something like "wait a moment, trying to process your post ..." and to ask for starting over only it it's unsuccsessful after 10-15 seconds, I'm sure that 99% of the repeat
posts would disapear.
Regards, Paulo

Brent - thank you VERY much. I was in withdrawals last night!
and Paulo does have a good point - happens to me a lot, and I feel like an idiot.

Thanks Brent for the comments. I was really worried when I got the gray screen last night. I love this forum and have found so much wonderful information for our trip.
Thanks Fodors and Brent. Everything seems to be back to normal tonight. You can see how important this forum is to all of us and how we panic when we can't get to it. We do appreciate having all this available and free. Thanks for the improvements and we'll try to be patient when necessary. It is also nice to know, Brent, that a real live person is watching over us and will come to he rescue or answer questions. Thanks again
That isn't the problem I was having last week. For 3 days last week I was unable at all to get through to any of the forums pages no matter whether I tried with my bookmark, typing in the URL or even going through the hyperlink at a search site. All I got for days was an error message.
