British computer designer Edgar C. Topping was one of the original developers of the software systems used in message board forums such as this.
Years ago newly posted messages would appear at the top of the list. Dr. Topping felt that this was unfair to the original posters. He rewrote the software placing new posts below the older ones.
These days we just refer to it as " topping".
Dr. Topping passed away in 1997 and is buried in Our Lady of Posts churchyard in West Baconshire.

One thing that may have not been coveyed was that it has almost become obsolete to NEED to "top" old threads since it has become so easy to cite the URL to take you there.
An unanswered question might still "deserve" to be topped if it has no replies - - but even then, you might do well to "disguise" the topping by adding some additional info.
Best wishes,
Rex
p.s. Didn't I already post to this thread once before - - with a "welcome back" greeting to surlok? Was that removed, or is my memory faulty? And why would it have been removed?
